Westinghouse AN/SQS 509 bow-mounted sonar (Kortenaer)
Modernisation: The original plan for the Elli's was to fit one Phalanx CIWS in place of the after 76 mm gun but for Gulf deployments in 1990-91 the gun was retained in 450 and 451 and two Phalanx fitted on the deck above the torpedo tubes. Corvus chaff launchers replaced by SRBOC (fitted either side of the bridge). The second batch of four ships were to be similarly modified but the original plan of one Phalanx vice the after 76 mm has been used as a cheaper alternative. An upgrade programme for these ships was planned to be completed by the end of 2006. Modernisation would focus on sensors, the combat data system and communications. Flight decks may be strengthened to receive Aegean Hawks.
There is a midlife modernization programme for six of the ten Greek ships. In February of 2003, Thales was awarded a contract worth 258 million euro for the Mid Life Modernization Program of the platform and combat system equipment of six Hellenic Navy Elli Class frigates. The program is in progress at HSY and supposedly completed in 2009. The Kountouriotis (F-462) and the Adrias (F-459) have been modernized. The other four ships are the Navarinon (F-461), the Limnos (F-451), the Elli (F-450), and the Aegaeon (F-460). The main modernization works to be performed are the following:
- Replacement of the combat management system and installation of new sensors
- Overhaul and improvement of radars
- Replacement of navigation systems and upgrade of communications systems
- Replacement of propulsion control system and of defined platform systems.
Specifically, the ships will be outfitted with the Thales Tacticos combat management system, a Thales Scout LPI surface search radar, and a Thales Mirador optronic director. Further, the vessels’ EDO CS-3701 ESM, Super Rapid Blooming Offboard Chaff countermeasures system, LW08 air search radar and WM25/STIR fire control radar will receive improvements.
Imtech, technical service provider in Europe, received an order from Hellenic Shipyards (Skaramanga, Greece) to modernise the automation on board of six frigates of the Hellenic Navy in Greece. Imtech will install an Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) that will be used to integrate all platform machinery, including electrical power generation & distribution, gas turbine propulsion, fire fighting, damage control and auxiliary systems. The objective of the modernisation is to enhance the operational effectiveness of the ships and extend the frigates operational life span beyond the year 2020.
