Does the PN need an aircraft carrier?

We have a very neglected Navy. I'm not sure if we can afford one but overall input is needed in our navy.

OMG, no. Why does PN need an AC? Pakistan has a small coastline with no major aspirations to be a major sea faring power. Further, no way can PN afford an AC.

I say they must study rather then buy aircraft carrier they study InshaAllah Pak will make own Carrier study is more importent than a carrier this time.

hey all of you

we dont need an aircraft carrier

instead of buying an ac
it will be better to buy more frigates

I think we all know that Carriers and N-Subs are expensive to build and maintain. Rather we want JV in Submarines with Germans on three projects:
2500 ton SSK
1100 ton SSK
140-160 ton for special operation that can be deployed by tanker ships...

You can't just build an aircraft carrier by studying them. Its not available in school curriculum like law of thermodynamics that you can just study. To build your own you have to first buy one then use it and gain experience then think about building it. This process will take atleast 50 years.

So lets start with a simple and achievable goal.

Pakistan should buy one of the Queen Elizabeth Class Carrier that the Angrez are building. They anyway want to get rid of one out of the two. So this is the best chance Paksitan has to get a Carrier. It is also not very expensive just $10 billion. Small change for Pakistan.

And yeah Pakistan definately needs an Aircraft Carrier. With a hostile Afghanistan we can literally hit you from any side. East West North and South. India will field 3 Air craft Carriers in the next decade. So Pakistan better get one. FAST.

obviously you know little of naval warfare

not frigates but destroyers(and proper ones) with a good air-def system, otherwise IN is going to blow the crap out of PN literally

germans wont do a jv with us
and then again with this f##in economy funds funds

the only way is we should built our own subs
we got tech from agostas and we can it from chinese if needed

what makes you think the germans will want to have a JV with us?

depends on you defination of a frigate
when i meant frigate it means a 4500tons class ship with hq9 type air defence
if we cant buy we should atleast try ourselfs to built
the new air defence system in hatf series (which is being rumoured to be in development ) can be an option for the modernizing existing f 22p frigates
and if we cant develop a sam then go for china easy to get and cheap

Yes Sir you are right as I don't know little but lot of naval warfare :P

P.S. Sir why so serious lets put a smile on your face ;)

Pardon me for not going through the previous pages, but i can guess the question of acquiring an AC is still under discussion.

I don't understand why there is even talk of an AC. Probably for a status as a powerful country, because we pakistanis have literally NO need for it. In naval warfare, fighter jets can play fleet defence roles for a defensive nation like us, and offensive roles (invasion) for aggressive countries. Though we are cash starved, but our navy has all assets that it requires (although in lesser numbers). We have frigates, subs, naval fighter jets, naval reconnaissance planes (P3 Orion) etc. The only thing that is felt missing is 2-3 specialised aegis type fleet air defence destroyers. THATS ALL in my opinion.

Our naval fighter jets, mirages (thunders in future), have a combat radius of greater than 1000km which can be increased with air-refuelling planes. How probable is it that we will have to fight that far from our coast given that our navy has a defensive doctrine. So thats why all air-strike elements that our navy requires are based on air bases close to coast like Karachi, and maybe along Makraan coast. In any possible scenario our fleet will always be under air support.

Aircraft carriers are actually power projection elements AWAY from home country. Because near home country we are already under the envelop of our airforce. The 2 basic objectives of carriers are battles in blue waters, and invading other countries. The first reason because when a country's navy battles away from home to protect an ally or an area of interest, it already sends a lot of big ships there (i'd say atleast 6-8) including supply ships. In such a scenario, having an aircraft carrier for support is only feasible. This way the carrier battle group (CBG) becomes self sustaining in everything. The CBG becomes capable of undertaking all possible type of operations AWAY from home, acting like a mini independent navy which never has to look back to home country crying 'mamaa' for help or support.

The second objective i.e invasion is self-explanatory. Carriers provide air strike and support element to ground forces, in addition to search & rescue deep inside enemy territory.

Pakistan doesn't fit in any of these objectives. Unless pakistan navy changes its doctrine from defensive (near coast battles) to offensive, and by offensive i don't mean 'offense is the best defence [1]' offensive but the invade/punish THAT country over there type of offensive, we would never ever require an aircraft carrier. Pakistan navy has no offensive designs and we should be proud of that. In other words we are a stabilising factor in our region.

At most i can imagine pakistan navy going for a helicopter carrier, which has many uses for a defensive navy as well. Probable uses:
* They can carry out helicopter based wide range and fast paced anti-submarine search & destroy operation.
* Large cargo helicopters can provide supplies to fleet quickly.
* Can carry out relief operations in other countries. Which would work wonderfully together with an amphibious ship.
* In future, it can be easily made to become a UAV base too.

[1] Submarines serve that purpose.

I think atleast one AC should be good but when I spoke with the Navy officers here in Bahrain they said we don't need one, that was back in 2005.

My Friend AC is not like a car just pick one and thats
Just for the protection of AC we need a battle group, then we have to train the Personal , money for the ac to fix it upgrade its old system cz even if we buy it will be 2nd hand then , we need naval version modified air craft , the charges to maintain it in sea

And the the biggest and most important reason is AC act like a air field you can deploy your air crafts which can do the offensive missions where ever you want the main threat to Pakistan is India and we have same border so we don't need it
it will only be a burden
