Does the PN need an aircraft carrier?

. .
What would you fly from it? Worn't out Harriers?

it will make a good Heli-carrier. PN can throw a lot of anti-sub warface helis and troop transports.

After all they only have two options as I said earlier. 1) to get thier wotever carrier sent to the bottom of the sea
2) to base it in foreign waters..

.
Yes Pakistan needs and Aircraft carrier. Since China is building one for herself , Pakistan should also asked or joint efforts with China to build another one for the Pakistan.

Actually China needs Carrier to Counter US marines stationed in Japan, Pakistan is not in such a bad need to Build its Carrier as its PAF is Capable enough to Compensate for a navy carrier
may be in near Future we may consider this

There is nothing indigenous with India. The aircraft carrier is built with assistance from Russia while the US and EU are also helping. Nuclear submarine built with the help, transfer of technology, training and weaponry from Russia, US and EU. Scorpense being built under licence. India is also procuring massive weaponry, technology and anti-missile system from Israel.

Did US built everything with technological helps from China as well? There might be nothing indigenous in US! Be happy now.

Pakistan has currently no need of an aircraft carrier. We won't need one for decades. AC's are for force projection around the world. Our current concern is to secure our own borders and our focus is on the internal security threat.

Even India does not need an aircraft carrier right now. Their acquisition is simply because they want to feel important. Where exactly India will station their carrier and who exactly they have the power to threaten is the question. The same questions need to be asked if anyone claims Pak needs a carrier. Who do we threaten with it?

Solid Snake if you UNDERSTOOD the geo economics of Asia and india,s rise as the 3rd largest GDP in Asia you would not say WHY DOES INDIA need a carrier.

India needs NOT one but three carriers.

Currently they are licensing building one vkrant 40k tonnes & the refit of the Russian one Gorskov.

India has vast coastl;ine TEN TIMES the size of Pakistan

AND TEN X THE TRADE import and export $$$$$$$$$ goes thru these sea lines.

India needs to trade in mid east, africa and south east asia. hundreds of billions of dollars $$$$$

THIS IS WHY INDIA IS TRYING TO BUILD THE MOST POWERFUL NAVY IN ASIA with 3 carrier battle groups.

ITS NOT JUST ABOUT PAKISTAN AND WAR MAKING india as trade & $$$$$$$ on its mind most

India can defend all of its coastline quite comfortably through surface ships and submarines. As for defending sea lines beyond India's waters, I think the only rival India could face is China. Neither China nor India will use their A/C's in even a major standoff. Its too risky. Hence, the A/C's are quite useless at the moment. Only when a country becomes a major economic power (in terms of PPP, i.e. very little poverty), can there be a justification for an A/C.

But of course, India can do whatever it wants. I think India's carriers will be vulnerable targets during any serious conflicts, despite the accompanying protection.

Solid Snake

India is the 3rd largest GDP in PPP in the world @ $5 trillion

11th Largest in GDP nominal at $1.5 trillion

And the 7th largest FoREX @ $320 BILLION

9TH Largest military defense budget at $37 billion

India,s imprts & exports are $500 billion

Second fastest growing economy in the world for last 10 years in TOP 20

" THIS IS WHY INDIA NEEDS 3 CARRIERS"

They certainly dont need them to cross the LOC lol

A/C will will be more effective during stand off than war time. I do not think India or China will or can move their carriers beyond strait of Malacca from both sides. But India has an advantage here thanks to A&N islands but at other front and open ocean it will be quite effective. against surface fleets.

If u look at the fact that India got a 35yr old , 17000ton LPD capable of carrying 6 Helicopters and 1000 marines for only 52 Million USD , while Pakistan is Paying 78 Million USD for a 33 Yr old 4000 ton frigate
This tells u who has got a better deal and who has got a raw deal

USS Trenton was first commissioned in march 1971. She remained in active USN service through 17 January 2007, when she was formalled transferred to IN, wherein she was formally commissioned commissioned on 22 June 2007. Which makes her 36 years old. USS McInerney was first commissioned December 1979 and decommissioned 31 August 2010, hot transferring to PN. At that point she was 30 years old.

By comparison to e.g. the somewhat smaller Schelde/Damen Enforcer based Dutch Rotterdam / De Witt and two Spanish Galicia class LPDs, which have hangarspace to maintain 6 NH90 or 4 EH101, the USS Trenton has hangar space for only a single Sea King sized helicopter though it can deckpark more. These modern, diesel powered European LPD examples carry 'only' around 600 marines as compared to 1440 on the steampowered ex-USN ship. But their crews are only 128 officers and men, compared to 508 for the ex-USN ship. Translated that to operating cost and you understand the bargain basement deal.
This apple as compared to the orange McInerney: a relatively modern gasturbine powered friigate with up to date sensors and good ASW and a crew of 226. The cost associated with her transfer to PN is the cost of her overhaul, crew training, spares etc. I'm sure there's more specialist training involved for a combat vessel than an amphib vessel. Also, her refurb included removal and overhauling of all four diesels generators, along with air conditioning units and refrigeration. Fuel oil tanks and voids were cleaned, inspected, repaired and painted. All shafting was removed and renovated. The controllable pitch propeller system was overhauled. Sea valves were removed and either repaired or replaced, and almost every pump was opened and inspected and overhauled as needed. Ventilators and fans went through a similar process of inspection and overhaul. Breakers, NR3 switchboard, windlass, and boat davit all got inspections and overhauls. Completely new equipment included a new navigation suite and bridge, the composite dome over the fully overhauled AN/SQS-56 sonar, and a VIP cabin. The refurbishment including upgraded anti-submarine capability.

If u guys insist on a platform capable of supporting fixed wing aircrafts then u can try convincing the US to Sell one of the 2 Tarawa class LHD/Harrier carriers like the USS Nassau WHICH WILL BE UP FOR DECOMMISSIONING IN 2015 , after 36 yrs in service
Now this ship can carry upto 20 Harriers and 10 Helicopters along with 1900 Marines and it will not cost more than 300 Million USD u can spend another 150 Million USD on 15-20 Second hand harriers and replace them with F35B when they become available to u after 2025
[/QUOTE=Archie;1501617]
Who says Nassau will come available for sale or military aid? USN post-WW2 has never given over a flattop of any sort to foreign countries.
What state do you thing USMC Harriers are in (again assuming these are available)
Assuming it is available for sales, what to fly from her? WOrn out GR9s or SHARs?

How are Harriers going to match up against Mig29k or Su-33 or like? Not a real option.
