This is a very unusual analysis or just wishful thinking of the US -

Does India need Pakistan to deter China?

Tensions between India and Pakistan seem to be easing this week, with both countries now pledging to cooperate on terrorism and intelligence-sharing after last November's attacks in Mumbai. It's a promising development which should allow Pakistan to turn its full attention to the all-out military campaign it's conducting in the lawless Swat valley. But I suspect there's more to the agreement than first meets the eye.

These recent overtures probably have less to do with Pakistan than another nuclear-armed rival: China. It's no secret that New Delhi and Beijing have been locked in a border dispute since the two countries fought a war in 1962. But the Chinese have been heavily developing their side of the so-called "Line of Actual Control," and the Indians have had to play some serious catch-up:

Chinese infrastructure building along the Line of Actual Control has forced India to hasten its own development process along the borders to keep pace with the neighbour's military might. [...]

'China has been building a lot of infrastructure — rails, airports, roads. We are also doing the same thing,' defence minister A K Antony said after inaugurating the two-day unified commanders-in-chief conference here."

India has every right to be worried. One new report suggests China may be trying to extend its reach into Kashmir, and possibly even Pakistan. Another hints at the possibility of an imminent Chinese invasion of India:

'China will launch an attack on India before 2012. There are multiple reasons for a desperate Beijing to teach India the final lesson, thereby ensuring Chinese supremacy in Asia in this century,' Bharat Verma, Editor of the Indian Defence Review, has said."

Given the urgency of the situation, it's possible that India is trying to mend its stormy relationship with Pakistanin order to prevent a Sino-Pakistani partnership, or lay the foundation of a containment policy towards to China from dominating Asia. (See Minxin Pei's recent article in FP for more on this point.)

Naturally, India might simply be pursuing cooperation with Pakistan for its own sake. But the move makes good strategic sense.

Update: To clarify, India and Pakistan agreed to cooperate only on terrorism, claiming that these discussions won't lead to any broader peace deal. Maybe.

Its wishful thinking. India cannot compare itself with China interms of its relations with Pakistan or even building one on the same level. Pakistan and India both have years of mistrust between them and it will takes years to remove the mistrust, not to forget that the disputes between the 2 countries are yet to resolve.

.
Actually just today the news is that India and Pak have agreed to 'delink' the composite dialogue from the terrorism issue.

what is the matter with the author's brain?
why dose china attack india before 2012?

Its not wishful thinking any nation can reach any level provided they have the determination to do so. " Sky is not the limit " I don't know the end result but atleast we are trying to raise ourselves and we are confident to succeed.

Everyone knows what India & Pakistan were and are. We share a common history till 1947. We have families with relatives on either sides, large ppl to ppl contact. We require just TWO good leaders on either side and a few changes in foreign policy and everything will change.

The idea - China or India needs to be looked at by analysts. Chindia, may be too wishful thinking. The truth may lie in between. China had invested rightly over the years and has been developing very fast. India a bit slower, but also developed quite fast .

Neither country would like to jeopardize their development, by getting into an armed conflict. Because, in a war, if ever it happens, as even the winner will be a looser, which none of these two great nations can afford.

There are minor, but long standing border disputes between China and India, which are not grave enough to give up decades of development, either for China or India. Sure there is competition in economic areas and regional hegemony at this moment. China and India competes in the world, to secure resources, that each country would require as it struggles to grow faster and faster. China, no doubt is the winner - round 1.

Today China's goal is not to beat or surpass India, it’s USA.

To keep India bogged down, Pakistan is a willing and disposable partner. But, here, most miss the point that Pakistan too, is being contained, at the same time. :china::pakistan:“The greatest Victory is one, where you do not have to fight “ And, this is the master stroke.

Meanwhile, China benefits from economic cooperation with India, and would, in my opinion continue to develop economic relationship with India, while, letting Pakistan do their bidding.

But a war between India and China? In my humble opinion, Naaaahhhh! very remote
