Yes IIT does offer PhDs in most fields of engineering and basic sciences. But often the IITans chose foreign universities because of the strength in the areas of research and a funding. The people who pursue PhD programs in the IITs mostly come from the second tier engineering colleges and other universities although lately I have seen some IIT grads staying back to pursure their PhDs in India... depending on their area of interest and research.

Top tier students from Qinghua, Beida go overseas. 2nd tier students from these schools, and top tier students from slightly lower ranked schools, go work in Shanghai Pudong's investment banks. 3rd tier students from these schools, 2nd tier students from slightly lower schools, and top students from schools like mine, go for PhDs at these schools. Our top researchers have completely been stolen by the West.

Good luck... there are a lot of Indians and Asians in Stanford, both as students and faculty. Wonderful campus out there!

I expected so... I guess most students aim to climb one step at a time, so it is logical they almost certainly move to the next higher "bracket" in university rankings, although a few are lucky enough to jump two steps.
But as you said rightly, the top researchers still end up going to the western universities. But with the changing job and research scenarios, a lot of them must be contemplating of coming back. There are still not enough RnD opportunities (at least in India) to get these people back and pay them appropriately. The ones who do come back, do so more out of nationalistic preference rather than personal/economic gains.

I know a few PhDs who went back to India, but mostly as professors or directors at govt research institutions, but none into the private sector industries yet... maybe a few, but not in my knowledge.

I am not sure that is the (only) correct way of looking at this.

Every country needs bright people to stay ahead. They realized it earlier than most and were sage enough to align their systems to be open for the best and the brightest from everywhere.

It benefits them but it also benefits the bright students and other professionals. They become better than they could have in their own countries. A large part of the success of the immigrants is owed to the exposure provided in the West, not just their innate brilliance.

Many more bright people stay back in India than leave for the West. They are not able to achieve a fraction of what a small number of Indians do in the USA. It shows the tremendous scope that India has to improve. It also shows that Indians (and Chinese and many other nationals) are second to none if they get the enabling environment that they get in the West.

I would say that the researchers become top researchers in the USA. Before that they were just good potential.

It's good to see that you can see the funny side of things!

You'd better sort things out with CardSharp; he's too mature and balanced a commentator, and it's pointless to stay on the wrong side of him. If there have been differences of opinion, my strong recommendation is sort it out, without necessarily grovelling. He's reasonable; if he feels you don't have a fixed idea or some kind of slimy agenda, and this is something you should be able to put across without trouble, he'll listen to you. This little feud is not good.

My remark was intended to pull his leg mercilessly, which I have license to do, as reciprocally true, and remind him not to generalise. If you two quarrel, it would be unproductive. Don't quarrel; sort it out, please. As a personal favour to me.

You have to understand one thing, for the average Indian there is no contact with China on personal level whatsoever. Only those who fly out and meet some on some foreign soil get to meet them. For the normal Indian its just noodles, kungfu movies and the excellent growth story of China.

Most of them don't know that these two countries are antagonistic to each other. To convince first you have to educate them about relations. Of the little number of people who really matter in decision making, the 1962 package and friendship with Pakistan is readily available to stop any further steps.

Hell there is no consensus clear cut on this forum with so limited number of people, you think some thing can be worked by people here??

And here we are lecturing about the behaviour of Indians. I guess you are never around when your fellow Pakistanis or some Chinese fake flags make threads about India, its poverty, its toilet problem, its hunger problem over and over again. Some people ignore it, some people take it seriously and in return talk trash about Pakistan/China. I guess since its "Pakistan" defence forum you fail to see the other side of the story.

Since you edited your post after I responded to it, I have to reply to this additional bit.

Your claim that Indians only talk trash in response to Pakistani or Chinese trolls is laughable. Indians have a tendency to attack any thread as a mob, whether it's the troll brigade against Pakistan, Bangladesh or Sri Lanks, or the damage control team towards the Chinese.

And Indians are some of the biggest whiners on PDF, complaining about mistreatment when there are any number of racist and vile posts by Indians that get overlooked. But posts against Indians get deleted and posters get issued infractions. Far from being discriminated against, you guys get extra leniency as foreign guests on a Pakistani forum.
