To all my South East Asian and South Asian Colleagues,

What are some factors that you see in your respective nation(s) that influences the birth rates in your country?

It is apparent to me that East Asia needs to adopt whatever factors influences the South East Asians to maintain their large birth rates.

Quite frankly, East Asia just needs to make more babies...A LOT of babies.

Thanks!

. . . . .
Referring to raising pregnancy rates and births. What can countries like the UK, France, Germany, Japan etc do ?
UK does not face that big issue, birth rate can still be increased.
Currently marriage is in upswing in UK. Also, lot of immigrant population in uk.

I dont know the psyche of japanese, why do people there dont want to have babies ?

- More family oriented atmosphere
- Marriage at early age
- Laws which don't screw the husband if things don't work out
- male heir a prized commodity

Are you talking about all of Asia or just Japan with its negative growth population?

Problem is that the Japanese as you well know don't need many babies because either its expensive to take care of or men and women don't want to take care of them. And even if the Japanese govt. paid them to have babies, it won't compensate spending so much money and time to take care of children. In developing countries people have children because they own farms and need them to take care of farms, where in developed countries people working in offices don't need children. The reason the U.S. for example is able to maintain its population growth in the positive to replace retired workers or deaths is immigration. Whether Japan would allow something like that is to be seen.

That is the good thing about the UK, and other Western nations--- there is a proclivity for immigration. I have always been a proponent for Japan to open doors and increase immigration quota. That alone can address our population situation.

To answer your question, the issue with Japanese young generation is that they are focusing more on work, school, studies. A lot in my cohort don't stop at bachelor level of education, many continue on to graduate or doctoral level. Then build professional life, family life / personal life is secondary.

Its a big issue, than and the obsession of Japanese to do everything perfect, won't stop until the job is perfect or near perfection. Its not good because it takes a toll on home life / family life.

Agreed. Especially about the immigration situation with the United State. From my living here in the United States, I notice that younger generation of people in my age cohort don't take work too seriously, they take time to 'destress' or 'blow off some steam' after work / studies. I like that about American culture / American people.

well then society needs to change to allow people to fail. Also, govt should give incentive to people who have 1 child at least.
The concept of work-life balance does not exist in east, that should change.

You should see the Europeans on their work ethic. They are more relaxed than the Americans. I remember something about Americans being the most productive in an article. Don't know if its true or not.

I bet ! The first time i came to the US, my classmates invited me out to the local bar. It was my first time in an American Bar setting. At first, i thought it was different, ambiance is not something i am used to. After a while, i realize how its so necessary to have a healthy personal life outside work.

Living in the 'states allowed me to really explore the social scenes here. Its not something that i readily did back in Japan.

Americans have a good support system for young people, i think. I bet the Europeans , too, have a good support system.

its true, americans are much more hard working than british (not sure about rest of europe).

A few problems I see:

Price of land too expensive. People don't want to have kids until they can have their own independent place that they can share with their wife/husband. Housing in Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong, Taipei, Singapore (the original post ww2 Asian tigers) are way too expensive. Young people just can't afford it.

College is expensive. More kids means more you have to save for their college tuition.

Health Care is expensive.

I think if Asian goverments can innovate a cheap, yet comfortable housing system, and subsidize college education more, you'll see a population explosion.
