@OP Heard a lot about social withdrawal of young Japanese (specially males) Hikomori or something like that. My field of study is sociology so I find this phenomenon very interesting. This points to a lot of social pressure on young males which can be one reason behind falling birth rates.

Ah, good to have a resident Sociologist on board.

I agree with you that there are some excessive social pressures on the younger generation. Failure and inability to acquire a goal is associated with incapability, and one issue that we are dealing with are rising suicide rates amongst our younger generation.

There is so much social pressure to succeed, that students who don't get into a notable college, or don't get a notable job, they go into social withdrawal, or even commit suicide.

What I think needs to be emphasized is a greater social support system. More religious activity , which helps and aids as a social support system.

Japan sex drive collapsed, weird sexual fetishes with robots and video games. I respect Japan restricting immigration despite it's declining population and keep Japan Japanese.

Somewhat it's past the point of no return. I believe China should be working on artificial womb technology it will be beneficial to increase the birth rate.

Yes there is a courtship ritual. The young man goes to the house of the girl, meets the father and mother, is invited in. Father and Mother converse with the young man, while the daughter serves them food / tea. The parents will approve, and the two couple then continue dating. If it is serious, then he eventually asks to marry her.

I grew up in the prefecture level, so I know it is still in the country side. The city life / urban culture tho is different. In the urban culture, men and women have multiple sex partners and almost detach themselves.

I think this is one problem with urban culture , there is a divorce from traditional family values.

FYI, A lot of Japanese men go abroad to marry foreign women. A lot of Japanese men marry women from Viet Nam, China, Philippines, Thailand, Taiwan. And bring them back.

Yes I would have thought Japan would put more emphasis on this, aging population = death of country. Survival of a country depends on it's population whether it's natural or not, this is why China should be looking into womb technology, human cloning, and genetic engineering of humans.

To be honest with you, it is the achilles heel of industrialization and over-development. In the quest to perfect systems and processes , in the effort to demand the very best of citizen and work force, the family life is affected. Unfortunately in the previous administrations that ruled Japan, all of them have put this issue of the population crises on the back burner. There was always more emphasis on corporation tax regimes, emphasis on overseas adventurism in regards to business outsourcing, emphasis on the social programs for elderly citizens, that there was not an emphasis on the birth rate.

What Japan needs to do , since it is still possible to increase our population growth, is to invest on resources on the prefecture level, to increase job production there -- this will help stem the movement of young people to the large cities. This is one of the reasons for the decline in population of the towns and villages all across Japan. More and more young people are leaving for the large cities.

What I like about Abe is that he is proposing a 5 Trillion Yen program to shuffle resources from the urban centers to the prefecture. The Government is trying to introduce greater maternity leave times and pay. This may reduce the stress of female workers and to allow them to take time to maintain their pregnancies.

What I would also like is for Abe to maintain his election promise to liberalise the immigration policy. Before 2000, Japan had a liberal policy in immigration of Chinese, Korean, and Taiwanese nationals. Since 2005, they have severely restricted the immigration of East Asians. South Koreans and Chinese make up about 1.0% of the Japanese total population , and they also have a large family dynamic. I believe that by allowing more Chinese to immigrate to Japan, they can contribute to the population. In fact, Japan should not limit immigration only for Chinese and Koreans, I believe we should be importing professionals also from Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Pakistan, etc.

We have to address this situation in a multifaceted manner.
