Diriliş Ertuğrul: Turkish views needed

What kind of show is that? Damn dude now I understand why you brothers are so desperate for new Ertuğrul episodes
Frankly I am celebrating that Turkish dramas are making such inroads into Pakistan. I don't particulary care for the 'Islamic' blah blah but the good news is this will prime Pakistani's for Turkish culture to seep in. Frankly that is great news for secularists like me. What would be better than Islamabad being twinned with Istanbul and resembling that city in 30 years time.

Come Turkey. Come. Save us from the double horrors of Desi [Indian garbage] and Saudi [religious tyranny].

The only person I will feel a bit upset about - if I saw him drinking/partying/womanising - is this man!

IBN-ul-ARABI - Thats why I will never search his name on google. I want to be ignorant if he’s not actually like his character.

So, lately this series called Diriliş Ertuğrul has taken off really fast in Pakistan, and I mean really fast, thanks to the Government and what I would assert as pan expansionist ideals of people.

It has quickly crossed 15 million views on a single video, which is a lot; and so naturally a lot threads have been up about it... however, our Turkish members here have chosen not to comment on, or share their opinion, barely if so.

So, I talked with some Turkish people, and got to know their opinion. Here's what I got to know.
  1. That the series is not at all historically accurate, and that is because there are very, very little to non existent sources on Ertuğrul, so most of the stuff is just made up, we don't know his religious views, or philosophy.
  2. The series is being used as a political tool by the 'ruling party' and for conservatives. They said that whenever there is a certain political atmosphere, the next episode will subtly address it here and there in their favor.
  3. It's not Turkish history, rather religious propaganda. If you want to feed false history as long as it's Islamic propaganda, then this is good for it.
Are these things true? What's your take on the series, I think it's good if you guys share your view because that's sort of an insider view which is more eye opening.

Ofcourse, other views are welcome.

Pretty irrelevant topic for Turks right now but a comment would be nice.

Dirilis Ertugrul for the most part is historically accurate- there is stuff that is made up in parts where there isn't very good sources, also some parts are slightly exaggerated and some charachters are added to make it more exciting. Overall it's watched all over Turkiye too and enjoyed and gets very good ratings. All in all I would say its a good series. There is other series that is created directly by AKP but I would not name them.

I've never watched even one episode and I despise such TV series.

We need to focus on our current shortcomings, failures and wrongdoings - now. Instead we're dwelling in the past and pointing out how great we WERE.

Frankly, I'm fed up with this kind of mindset which is poisonous and IMO probably even haram because we're neglecting our future.

If you want to feel pride, if you want to influence the world, if you want to do something for Islam and fatherland you have just one option: use your Allah-given brain and work for it.

Words of gold, bro. Today a Gazi is someone who can bring prosperity for his people by education, modernising and being helpful to the community in general.

I'm a conservative guy but also I'm anti-Erdogan, I believe in real secularism (but not in that liberalism crap) because It's one of the basic values of Islam. To me, Ataturk's six basic principles are only way to glory. He's neither a British agent nor a Jesus-like figure; he's just one of the greatest Turkish leaders Just like Mehmed II, Bayezid the first or Selim the Grim. He saved a nation which was destined to fall... We could've very well become like the Arab nations or the rest of the muslim world, no offense to others but there's a real reason why we are still the thoughest muslim nation while we still went through a lot of disasters for the past 400 years. We were never occupied but we still went through a lot which no other nation or state would still be around if they faced the same conditions... Again, I'm not like those slaves of the west who hide behind Ataturk's name and don't care about his values. If Ataturk was alive today, he would spit on their faces as they have become his enemies' puppets... Afterall, I care about Islamic values but I also try to understand Ataturk's ideas and struggles...

The video below is a must watch for everybody... (There's an English subtitle as well)

Ataturk was a muslim, but he also drank alcohol. He banned the religious clothing and he abolished the caliphate for a reason. If he never have done that, we would've basically become like Iran... Remember people, there's still a crescent in our flag and if you take your head out of the window, you can still hear the call to prayer everyday...

And when it comes to the show, there's no need to bother yourself with these brother, just try to enjoy the show. There are many non-Turkish fans of the Magnificent Century show but it's nnot historical accurate too, it's broadcasted across the world including Europe but no one cares about it being historically accurate. I understand your point but my advice is just try to not care about it...
By the way, I've always wondered, which city are you in brother?

This

I have always said that Ataturk is the most MISUNDERSTOOD leader in world history

He is seen as a "liberal" by Westerners (when he was no such thing) and a "traitor" by Islamic conservatives (which is ironic considering that if Ataturk did not liberate Turkey during the war of independence at least half of the country would be Christian right now).

Ataturkism or Kemalism can neither be classed as Right-wing or left-wing in it's true form. It is a secular conservatism which encourages family values, love of the nation, militarism and respect of ancestors.

It neither banned religion nor force it onto people. Only thing I do consider the ban on headscarfes in Universities and public office to be step too far in my opinion but I have heard from people that these laws came in after Ataturk? Not sure if that was true or not but certainly interesting to hear..

Every single secular Muslim admires and respect Ataturk, he was a great individual with much more good attributes than flaws.

Yeah those laws came after Ataturk; his mom, sister and wife were wearing headscarfs too, why would he ban them? Keep in mind that Turkey was one of the first counties in Europe to give voting rights for women and Ataturk's adopted daughter was the World's first female fighter pilot
By the way, you are a hundred percent right. Surely it takes a whole lotta reading to understand Ataturk, hell I used to think he was overrated when I was in highscool...

It’s very important to clarify that we are talking about the real secularism that existed during Atatürk which is completely opposite from today’s imposed “secularism” to us people (around the world) by MSM
