India's ODI cricket captain M S Dhoni, conferred an honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel, is undergoing a two-week initial training with the elite Para regiment of the force in Agra.

It is expected that the ace cricketer, who had written to the Army authorities to undertake the training, will do five parachute jumps once he finishes his course.

He reported to the Para Brigade, Agra for initial training in Para Jump by Para Training School on August 5.

He is expected to do five jumps after two week training, Defence Ministry spokesperson Sitanshu Kar said.

Dhoni had in 2011 donned the uniform of a commando as he was conferred an honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Parachute Regiment.

He was conferred the honour for outstanding contribution in the field of sports and his commitment to the Army on various occasions.

"It's a real honour as I always wanted to be part of the Indian Army. It's (joining the Indian Army) something that I always wanted to achieve as a kid and now that I have donned the olive greens, my dream has been fulfilled," Dhoni had then said.

Since then, Dhoni has maintained that he would "definitely" want to serve the Army actively once he bids adieu to the game.

. . . . .
In the article he says that he would love to serve the Army actively once he retires.

Is there any precedent for such a case in the Indian Army?

A career Lt Col rank officer would be a CO of a unit or in a senior administrative job deeply involved in day to day ops...is it the same with an honorary member?

I always thought it would just be for photo shoots and publicity...

He would be used as a mascot. No army will take a man of dhoni's age and with no formal training as a field commander. His rank is just a mere decoration and nothing else. At best he will be present in army functions and stuff like that.

That's what I was thinking as well.

But his statements that "Dhoni has maintained that he would "definitely" want to serve the Army actively once he bids adieu to the game." got me a bit confused.

Here its more about the formal training which Indian army can give in short period of time for all Indians in case of any real war and our enemies can see millions of volunteers will be raised in very short period.

700 million of Indian population is below 30 years .

He would serve in his capacity as a mascot. Everybody attached with the army is not a soldier. There are cooks, cleaners, education faculty, administrative desk jobs and other branches which rarely see combat.

In India an individual has to clear a written exam and an interview before he is selected for training. Since dhoni has not done that and is over-age he will probably not even be assigned a desk job. He will serve "actively" in his duties given to any honorary rank member.

No individual can be trained to the same level of an infantry soldier in 2 weeks. The idea is ridiculous. Boot camps last longer than 2 weeks.

Raising an army, especially for modern battles, is not about arming an individual with AK-47. These people would not be volunteers but cannon fodder. The age of human wave tactics is over. 2 week training is good for village defence committees and such but for a member of the paratroopers it is an insult.
