Dhaka's 2nd multiplex movie theater opening on Eid ul Fitr

Shaolin Soccer is Hong Kongese.

All foreign films are banned in Bangladesh. It's like we cannot import brand new films from abroad. For the latest Hollywood/Bollywood releases, we'd have to wait for some time before they are to be screened in places like Star Cineplex.

There are some info we can dig:

This was mainly done to 'protect' the Bangladeshi film industry. Nobody watches Bangladeshi-made films other than rickshaw-pullers.

The ban wasn't originally imposed by the Islamists as some outsider would initially perceive in the post-independence era. The Islamists in Bangladesh are hardly a force to contend with in the politics of Bangladesh. They have only recently gained some minor advances. Not intending to get political, but just stating the picture there.

As for me, I'm a fan of Hollywood films. Especially the ones out of comic book heroes. Action baby! :chilli:

People should be free to choose what they like. Be it Indian, American, Chinese or Bangladeshi.

They can censor those 'inappropriate' scenes. I know they do that in Star Cineplex.

Sorry yeah it's Hong Kong films, my bad it's been some time since I've been to Bangladesh. But what I've seen with the Bangladesh people especially the male population is that they love their cliche action/fighting films which Bollywood tends to have a lot of. Back home they love Shahrukhan, Amir Khan, Saif Ali Khan etc. When 'Ghajini' came out they went crazy over it lol.

Well depends on the movie, some Bollywood movies misrepresent Muslims which Muslim countries like BD and PAK won't take lightly to. Regarding Bangladesh, Jamaat see it as a threat which I kind of agree on, Bollywood movies have become so westernised back in the day I could watch a Bollywood movie with my family with out worrying about any explicit/lovey dovey scenes but now, no comment. They try to imitate Hollywood so much it's actually funny, when they speak English that I always have to take the **** out of their accents lol. These explicit scenes aren't taken lightly in Bangladesh or Pakistan or even India.

If you've ever watched popular comedy films such as 'Hangover', 'Grownups', etc these have been imitated heavily by Bollywood. I thought the Chinese were pros at ripping off content lol.

yes the amount of nudity and explicit parts in some bollywood movies nowadays is a cause for concern. in line with that even trends among bollywood community itself is increasingly becoming more perverted

Even Somalis in my area watch Bollywood films, they know who Amitabh Bacchan is, Shahrukhan is etc. Even the Polish and Romanians are walking down the street blasting out 'Chaiya chaiya' wearing lengha's and Salwar Kameez. I think Bollywood is becoming universal whether people understand it or not.

Many Bangladeshis can't go sleep without listening to it and then there's many who despise Bollywood. My family hate Bollywood and hardly ever switch on to Star plus except my sis.

I have seen romanians and bulgarians watching dance numbers but thats completely different from following movies, they can never understand bollywood.. only a desi can...

Many Bangladeshi families are now moving onto Pakistani dramas on channels such as GEO TV which isn't surprising and Pakistani dramas are way less cliche and doesn't have your typical 'evil step mum', innocent daughter in law etc...The Pakistani girls haven't got 10 layers of slap on compared to their Indian counterparts. Plus the way the drama is recorded/directed is way better than Star Plus. Seems odd that indians go to sleep with their jewelry on :S

All movie halls should have few rows of twin sofa instead of regular chair for couples... :smitten:

Not really......most movie theaters in BD do not target upper,upper-middle or middle class families(most posters here are from that group).....They mainly cater to poorer audiences who are not very keen on films by Satyajit Ray......The multiplexes cater to the richer population and are busy with hollywood movies or good Bangla movies made in Bngladesh or sometimes joint venture films between Dhaka and Kolkata.....But you can find any Ritwik Ghatak movies on DVD which are pretty popular among a certain group of people.....I personally am a fan of 'Feluda' and kinda memorized most of the books and watched 'ALL' and I mean 'ALL' Feluda movies that ever came out......The newer ones are kinda disapointing as they are set in a modern setting with cell phones and changed Jatayo's Ambassador with a modern car!

Bobita was the female lead in the movie.

Ashani Sanket won the Golden Bear prize at the 1973 Berlin Film Festival. Bobita's performance was central to the film.
