Dhaka overtakes Karachi on "Liveability Index 2022"

Of course, Karachi. You will feel the power of the Pakistani navy when you are in Karachi. There is nothing similar in Dhaka. You will only find garbage and traffic in Dhaka, while Karachi is beautiful. Not to mention that Dhaka is one of the top polluted cities in the world

Karachi has its polluted spots just like Dhaka.

Difference is that Dhaka is getting cleaner in relative terms as it is pulling down lots of slums and replacing them with apartment blocks - it is coming from a very low base and so easier to do. Also a lot of sanitation infrastructure is getting put in.

Dhaka has more congestion for sure but let us see how the metro lines being built and the bypass infrastructure being built leads to a reduction in this area - it will take many years before this can be assessed.

We certainly know the power of the Pak Army (aka Neutrals)! Pak Navy is in the same league?

Dhaka honestly as per people who visited there is absolutely and horrendously dirty, congested and un developed.

Parts of Dhaka like the Gulshan business area is very modern, with midrises office buildings to taller 28-32 stories high.

Yes many parts of Dhaka are congested, in the sense that population density is higher than Karachi. Certainly more green than Karachi and a Metro being constructed there. Karachi has just started a few BRTS corridors.

Karachi is widespread, wider roads, residential areas with huge bungalows are not that present in Dhaka.

Karachi high end residential areas are clean and well planned, open.

But there is no public transport.

Thanks for a balanced and impartial assessment.

Karachi will still be a cleaner city and its infrastructure better than BD in 2022.

We need to understand that this index is not just about cleanliness and infrastructure of a city as Tehran is on the bottom 10 list.

Muslim countries would come naturally more down the list than others that allow nighclubs etc.

Karachi is a dry desert land basically.
So is Dubai. And actually this confers advantage to Karachi - which is why during the British Raj Karachi was regarded as the cleanest, most developed municipality in the Raj. It attracted Armenian, Jews, Parsee, Iranian and other trading groups from across Eurasia.

I am surprised Tehran is in the bottom ten list. It's a beautiful city.
Anything with a eye as prefix gets bummed to the bottom. Eye-Ran. Your fcuked. Eye-raq your fcuked etc.

I didn't want to say that. I was bring polite.

No need to be polite, speak your mind, no offense will be taken. We already know Dhaka is shit.

Yeah pretty much. I wonder what criteria they used to decide between the cities.

Karachi city has about 100,000 acres of mangrove forest just at the south east edge of the city, not yet explored as a tourist area. And the Mangrove area of Pakistan has increased after the initial decline.

Well yes, I think night life (i.e. freedom to copulate anywhere like animals, getting drunk and going around half naked) is one of the important criteria.

.
Karachi still has a big lead on infrastructure but as Dhaka is building its infrastructure from such a low base, it should be well ahead of Karachi by the end of this decade in this index.

To slow and too less progress, I will say.

There’s also a curious anti-urban slant in these assessments of urban qualities. How can one judge a city of just 400,000 located in one of the world’s richest countries by the same metrics as places like Beijing, Bangkok, or Tokyo—a megacity of almost 10 million souls that is ranked right behind it on the Monocle list? Celebrating the enviable living conditions in Copenhagen (number four) or Helsinki (six) may offer inspiration to those trapped in less-prosperous places, but it’s hard not to wonder why these rankings tend to tap wealthy, smaller cities when larger, less wealthy ones may be making more radical, transformative improvements in life quality.

Like any big city Dhaka has good and bad sides

You are again being polite. You guys misunderstood us, we Bengalis are quite rational people, as long as you are rational we don't take offense. No Bengali here ever mentioned Dhaka is a good city but every single one of us said it's shit. We only argue about the reasons for it being shit based on facts, the facts being we did not put any money towards improving it, we had other priorities. Only recently we have some breathing room and putting money towards it and the rest of the country's infrastructure.

Most livable are the keywords, that's why.
