Dhaka more expensive than many South Asian cities: EIU

.
UK bhai, Dhaka is one of the most densely populated cities in the world and almost half of its population live in slums or on footpath. How is metro rail going to solve this problem?
Metro rail will render 80 percent of Buses, CNGs, minibuses, tempos and 50 percent of Rickshaws useless once all the 5 phage of it constructed by 2035.Huge spaces in the road will free up for the uses of cars and taxis.

''Half of the Dhaka population live in slums and footpath'' is a Indian/Pakistani style rhetoric. half of the population in slum may be by the developed country standard, but not in south Asian standard. If you apply developed, western standard than even half of Delhi, Mumbai or Karachi population also live in slum.
Dhaka city is known as the city of privare cars. We literally have no public transport in this city. Even those who don't wanna travel via private cars they have no other option because public transports r extremely overcrowded(due to lack of numbers).
Not really, only 7 percent resident in Dhaka has private car.It is actually one of the least motorized city in the world. This is why MRT, BRT, circular/ring road, water transport is so important for Dhaka.

As @Nilgiri can point out your desh has one of the lowest car ownership rates (less than Ethiopia). If dhaka is known as anything it’s for its bicycles, broken down autos, thousand of people ah hung from trains, and jugaad “cars”.

You can blame west Pakistan, its army, even to Yahya Khan,Although he was the founder of Islamabad the best planned city in south Asia :agree:
Then u have read nothing on this forum. The clown Uk bengali even wnet on to write that mangla dam, tarebla dam and entire islamabad city were built on bang bang desh jute export money LMAO trust me no kidding.

Chittagong looks more developed and beautiful than Kolkata. If you think Kolkata is a tier 3/4(Indian standard) city than I have nothing to say.It only shows your inferiority complex in front of the Indians aka Hindustani.

At best, it compares to Durgapur or Siliguri. I bet they have more high rises than Chittagong.

Dhaka more expensive than many South Asian cities: EIU

Dhaka has become cheaper than 12 months ago as it has fallen 10 places in rankings on the Worldwide Cost of Living Index 2018.

But the Bangladesh capital is still the 72nd most expensive city relative to others, and more expensive than Bangalore, Chennai, Karachi and New Delhi in South Asia.

Singapore is the world’s most expensive in the cost of living ranking covering 133 cities worldwide, according to a study released by the Economist Intelligence Unit or EIU on Thursday.

Seoul is the only other city in the top ten that has maintained its ranking from the previous year. In the rest of Asia, Hong Kong and Sydney join Singapore and Seoul in the top ten. Low inflation has pushed Tokyo and Osaka out of the top ten.

The Japanese capital, which was the world’s most expensive city until 2013, has moved seven places down the ranking in the past 12 months.

Conversely, Seoul, which was ranked 21st five years ago, is now in sixth position.

The cheapest cities in the world have seen some changes over the past 12 months, according to the study.

Asia is home to some of the world’s most expensive cities—but to many of the world’s cheapest cities too.

Within Asia, the best value for money has traditionally been offered by South Asian cities, particularly those in India and Pakistan. To an extent this remains true, and Bangalore, Chennai, Karachi and New Delhi feature among the ten cheapest locations surveyed.

India is tipped for rapid economic expansion, but in per-head terms wage and spending growth will remain low.

Income inequality means that low wages are the norm, limiting household spending and creating many tiers of pricing as well as strong competition from a range of retail sources.

This, combined with a cheap and plentiful supply of goods into cities from rural producers with short supply chains as well as government subsidies on some products, has kept prices down, especially by Western standards, the study says.

Nonetheless, although South Asian cities traditionally occupy positions among the ten cheapest, they are no longer the cheapest cities in the world.

Last year that title was held by Kazakhstan’s business centre, Almaty, which fell in the ranking following a 50 percent devaluation of the national currency, the tenge, after it was allowed to float in August 2015.

This year it is Syria’s capital, Damascus, which occupies that position, having fallen by 14 places in the past 12 months.

The citizens of Damascus may not feel that the city is getting cheaper, with inflation averaging an estimated 28 percent in Syria during 2017.

I was in Dhaka for 7 days in Jan 2018 didn't find it on expensive side compare to Indian cities. i was staying in Gulshan Area and traveled to various city areas by taxi. food wise it is on cheaper side compare to Indian cities.

Dhaka has to be the worst city in the world right now. It has become almost unlivable.
Distance between utrara and khilkhet won't be more than two kilometres but it takes almost 2 hours for me to pass this small distance. A pathetic city to live in from almost every possible angle.
areas like Gulshan are good.

Dear brother/sister Sakra, ur post clearly shows that u don't know much about dhaka city. Trust me, If Dhaka city was indeed known as the city of Bicycles, nobody would be more happier than a permanent resident like me. At lest we wouldn't have to waste hours after hours on roads.

Just to make it clear to you, we aren't talking about the whole Bangladesh here. We r talking about Dhaka city only. Its a well known fact that private cars take over almost 70 percent of roads in Dhaka city while the reaming 30 percent is shared by public transport, trucks, vans or other vehicles.

.
Why dont you walk?
Many BD people think they are from the noble families, so it is below their esteem to walk even a small distance. So, they use rickshaws to look noble. I do not understand what is the relationship between belonging to a noble family and walking on foot.

Thanks for sharing your first hand experience in Dhaka.Yes food, clothing, rent, education, utility bill are cheaper than Indian cities but some other items which are vital part of living cost calculation are expensive in Dhaka such as private car, wine, taxi ride, internet etc. Here cost of living comparison between Mumbai and Dhaka from Numbeo which conform with your statement.

Regarding Taxi and other things u mentioned depends on how u buying. On Day 1 I bought Taxi from Hotel from
Gulshan to Bada...for 4 hrs.. can u believe what they charged me.. Rs.3500 Tk. that is robbery.

Next day I hired Taxi through" Chalo Taxi" for 8 Hrs..they charged me 3000 Tk..
So overall Dhaka is way list expensive compare to Indian cities but then in india again it depends how you do things.

And Please to all BD Posters: People in Bangladesh are very Honest.. must say they always treats you well. And I have very high regard for you people for that but please don't compare India Infra with BD infra..
Just see Dhaka Airport...at my Home City, Ahmedabad, Our Bus Stand is better then Dhaka international Airport.
Sorry if it hurts but that Airport is tearing your Image.

They classify Kolkata as a city; you can guess these Durga and Sili must be somewhere between a village and a town.

Kolkata is not least livable Dhaka !!!

Delhi metro physical construction started in 1998 and is still ongoing.
Dhaka metro construction started 2017 and planned to be finished in 2035.

Delhi metro built nearly 360 km in 20 years, what about your plan?

Metro rail line 1 will come online by 2019, with first phase open by 2019 and the whole line by 2020.

These are outdated timelines. I don't see piers or viaducts being built anywhere yet. So at the best it is 202-2022.

That was very unfortunate. In Dhaka or any other places, there is no rules, regulation for Taxi fair. It is still dependent on face to face negotiation and it is very likely to obtain a bad burgain specially if you are new in the city.

This is because, Taxi service in Dhaka is still in it's infancy. The pervasive presence of rickshaw, CNG and minibus in all places made the Taxi service less popular as those option are cheaper.

We all agree that, infrastructure wise Bangladesh is much behind India in some cases.

Dhaka airport was built in 1970s and still remain the same. There is a new 2 billion dollar project under pipeline to build a new terminal and runway in the existing airport. Besides this, govt. is looking for a new site near Dhaka to build a new, much bigger airport keeping in mind the traffic flow for the next 100 years which would be based on Bangkok Subarnabhumi airport in size and capacity.
