Development of Brahmos’ improved version underway

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 30: An improved version of the Brahmos missile -- the hypersonic Brahmos Version-2 cruise missile -- is in the process of development and will be ready for induction in the Army in the next five years, a top defence official said here on Sunday.

"Brahmos, produced by Brahmos Aerospace Ltd, an Indo-Russia joint venture, has now become the world leader in missile systems and had already established a 'brand' name globally," DRDO Chief Controller and Brahmos Aerospace Corporation CEO A Sivathanu Pillai said.

He was speaking to reporters on the eve of the Brahmos Aerospace Corporation taking over the state run-Kerala Hightech Industries Ltd (KELTEC) here.

The unit, to be known as Brahoms Aerospace (Trivandrum) Ltd, the first defence production unit in the state, would be turned into a major centre for production of components and integration of the supersonic missile system. "The full-fledged Brahmos complex will be ready for production and assembling in two to three years time," he said.

"A lot of orders have come for the missile both from Army and Navy, and with an objective to enlarge its production capacity the Brahmos aerospace have decided to have a second production unit here, other than in Hyderabad," Pillai said, explaining the reasons for KELTEC's take over.

Yet another Russian / Indian joint venture. Whoever named this Cruise missile, named it wrong. It should have been called "MosDel".

Doesn't Brahmos refer to two rivers, the Moskva and Brahmaputra? The former runs thru Moscow, the latter is largest river in India.

Just curious...

Neo, you are correct on the Naming part of the BrahMos missile, (Brahamputra+Moskva rivers), but i am not sure if Brahmaputra can be termed as largest (longest )river in India. The largest would be Ganges.

Russian-Indian BrahMos JV buys plant to double missile production

NEW DELHI, December 31 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian-Indian joint venture BrahMos has bought a manufacturing plant in south India to double production of its supersonic cruise missiles, a company spokesman said on Monday.

The joint venture has bought a plant from state company Kerala Hightech Industries Ltd, the purchase that would allow it to bring production to 50 BrahMos missiles a year.

Praveen Pathak said the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), which represents the Indian side in the BrahMos venture, will invest around $25 million in the plant within a year or two, and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) will invest another $6 million.

"At the plant in [the state of] Kerala, we will assemble BrahMos missiles, as well as make components for Astra rockets produced by ISRO," Pathak said.

Earlier reports said the contract on the transfer of the plant's ownership to BrahMos will be signed January 1, 2008.

Established in 1998, BrahMos Aerospace designs, produces and markets supersonic missiles, whose sea-based and land-based versions have been successfully tested and put into service with the Indian Army and Navy.

The Brahmos missile has a range of 180 miles and can carry a conventional warhead of up to 660 pounds. It can hit ground targets flying at an altitude as low as 10 meters (30 feet) and at a speed of Mach 2.8, which is about three times faster than the U.S.-made subsonic Tomahawk cruise missile.

Experts estimate that India might purchase up to 1,000 BrahMos missiles for its Armed Forces in the next decade, and export 2,000 to third countries during the same period.

Work is currently underway to create aircraft- and submarine-based BrahMos missiles

Sam,
Bramaputra is definately the longer than Ganges:

Ganges : 2.510 km (1.557 milies) Ganges - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Brahmaputra: 2.900 km (1.800 milies) Brahmaputra River - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Neo, your figures are no doubt correct in the total length of both the rivers. What i was referring to was the Brahmaputra river flow in India, when i said that I was not sure if it can be termed longest (in India).

Although the total length of the Brahmaputra (about 1,800 miles) exceeds that of the Ganges, almost 800 miles flows in Tibet itself where it is called the Tsangpo.
