The Russian T-90S will form the mainstay of India’s future force, despite that tank’s performance issues in hot weather. That won’t change, but after beating the T-90 in a number of trials, the Arjun now has a clear future in India…

That appeared to close the book on a failed project, but opinion in India was sharply split. Many observers cited this as the final failure. Other were noting the problems with the T-90s, and the Army’s refusal to conduct side-by-side tests, alongside recent test successes that began earning the Arun some military fans. In May 2010 desert trials alongside the T-90S, the Arjun did surprisingly well.

The Army’s plan still calls for 1,657 T-90S “Bhishma” tanks at about 12 crore (INR 120 million, about $2.78 million) each if prices remain stable. About 1,000 of those are slated to be built in India by Avadi Heavy Industries, the same firm that builds the Arjuns. They will be joined by just 248 Arjuns at about 16.8 crore (INR 168 million, about $3.92 million) each, as well as 692 older T-72 tanks upgraded to the T-72M1 “Ajeya” standard. This overall plan changes the force structure proposed in 2006, from 3,780 tanks (1,302 T-90s and 2,480 T-72s) to 2,597 higher-end tanks.

It is simple economics- right now the T-90S costs <$3mn apeice for a capable tank, the Arjun MK.2 will cost >$8mn apeaice. Yes with mass production and greater orders the unit price can come down to $5mn. It is like the LCA VS MKI, there will be a hi-lo mix until ~2020 when the FMBT or Arjun MK.3 comes into service,

How is it informative? It is trolling plain and simple. The intent behind your intial post was not educational but to attack the Arjun and Indians.

So now the insult comes on nationality instead of the tank itself, cant believe how painful facts can be.

Here you go read up on the problems of upgradig our old tanks

Indian Army Wants Add Another 1,000 T-90S Tanks by 2020 (updated)

2008 article (5 years old). This info is incredibly outdated. It is very unlikely anywhere near 1,000 extra T-90S but there is a serious shortfall that needs to be met with the phasing-out of the T-72s and T-55s. This will be met by the Arjun Mk.2 and later tanks (either the MK.3 or FMBT). The exisiting T-90S will be upgraded to the "MS" standard.

Any issues relating to apprehension of the IA top-brass in full on supporting the Arjun is just as much to do with outdated mindsets as anything else. Watching this vid you can tell there was quite some work put in by the DRDO to persuade/educate the IA in 21st, cutting edge training techniques (simulator) and to operating heavy, 4 crew-member MBT. Given that until the Arjun entered service the IA has only ever really used tanks of Soviet/Russian design it is understandable there might have been some reluctance to go in for the Arjun especially considering the delays in this project.

The Arjun is very much based on Western MBT operational philosophies and the IA has been rooted in Russian MBT operations philosophies. Mindsets aren't going to change overnight. Have an open mind mate.

At some point you have to re invest in our own industry. Comparing prices is a moot point. Their industry is in a better position. Oh well. As for Kapoor I pointed his immorality. The sad thing is that he is not alone. There are such shady characters who enjoy certain immunity and protection

As for operational philiosphies. We need to be dynamic. The more I see, the more I realize the British and others really broke India's identity. What happened to the rich, dynamic, ever changing mindset we had as a people? We used to be the basis of invention, philosophies, etc for centuries. When India created our first supercomputer, we didn;t have a clue where to start. But we did it on our own. We need to learn from our own mistakes. The problem you pointed out in with our brass is there with the dinosaurs in our gov't.

Knowing when to do so is harder then it sounds. Managing the need to get the best possible gear for your military and investing in your own industry that is not quite up to the standard of international firms is a fine balance. If you know anything about opportunity costs then you'll know what I'm talking about.

So let me ask you why does our govt consistenly stop the private players from getting involved? Its well known even the small players are in a better position for some projects. What this great wall to block their contributions?

Don;t know much about opportunity costs. Im in medical....but I may go back to study finance or CPA after seeing what my nephew is making as IB!

Things change mate, the next generation is very different, the Indian military itself is changing and adapting. The Indian military is taking on more educated recruits and imparting more education than ever in its history.

The GoI/politicians are a conversation for another time.

In the past this was true but these days things are changing and in a big way. The future will yield more such private-public invlvment.

lol, arjunk HAHAHA!!!!

and its the good shooting practice for pakistan lol

Army sources have freely admitted to FORCE, that there is a mind block with regard to the Arjun, by those who have operated the T series tanks. But they also admit that the Arjun is appreciably more modern in comparison to the T-72 & T-90, in many respects. For example, the Arjun can fire almost twice the number of rounds the T series tanks can, from its main gun.

During the trials in 2000, the Kanchan Armour on Arjun MBT was able to withstand a hit from a T-72 at point blank range,

target practice......:rofl::rofl:
