Desi? Who are "Desi"

. . . .
I've never met any Pakistani who call themself "Desi". It's usually indians who use this term.

I don't have any problem if somebody calls me Desi. But i don't use this word to describe myself.

.
ALL those from Subcontinent are called desis. tharkis who try to portray as desi american, desi brits hehehe

ok ok dont get mad.

. .
when a person uses term desi for him self he actually means he doesn't follow foreign language (english), foreign fashion (western)......

and when they use this term an incredible pride can be seen in their eyes.....

earlier in around 1970's this term was used to insult poor and lower class people as people then used to think foreign(western) culture was better than indian itself

. . .
It means indigenous and home-made.

No relation to S. Asia. English has copied the word with an erroneous meaning.

Anecdote: somebody made a remark about me being desi at a middle eastern airport, and I told him I wasn't since I wasn't arab. He seemed confused.

.
This is what my dictionary has to say :agree:

.
Afghanistan itself comes in S.Asia.......

That is disputed. According to the UN, Afghanistan is in South Asia but then so is Iran! Most Afghans i think consider themselves Central Asian, not South Asian. But if they do that then our Northern Areas are also Central Asian due to the Pashtuns and other people of northern areas.

Personally i also feel they are more Central Asian but then that makes Pakistan both South and Central Asian.
