Com'on you people.. I don't think he said 'Garba is satanic or demonic in it's essence'. He merely commented on the way 'Garba has lost its true essence and is now being used as a cover for sinister purposes'. While I don't agree with either statements, I do believe there is nothing wrong with what he said.
In retrospect, I think he might not be wrong after all. See what what we have made of our festivals? How many of us actually take part in Holika dahan the night before Holi. Haven't we made Holi an excuse for a day full of 'Masti' without understanding the essence of the festival. And Diwali too. While I still see most of us performing 'Laxmi Puja and Ganesh Puja', there are others who are just not interested in the Puja and take it as an opportunity just to play with fireworks.
Nothing wrong with celebration but celebration should be the culmination of festivities in its true essence.

There would have been nothing wrong even if you though Garba was demonic. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. The problem is when you express that opinion and make it into hate speech.

What he said was wrong especially in the light of Hindu community warning that muslim boys are entering garba with malicious intentions. He could just as easily asked the muslim boys to stay out of Garba since it was aginst islam or whatever. No one would have objected to that since he is a muslim and has full right to express his opinion on Islam without the fear of being misrepresented or misunderstood. His worlds on islam carries weight and responsibility, unlike his speech on Hinduism.

Second part is about how people perceive the festival and what they do about it.

Garba is celebrated as the birth of Shakti, of yang or energy or fire. Shiv-Shakti is the Matter-Energy balance. It's a CELEBRATION.

The very act of Celebrating the birth of shakti is an act of worship. You do not have to do pooja or tapasya. Its a simple form of worship that helps you remember some of the essence of Hinduism, the importance of women, social living, community values and unity of purpose.

The community dance is the reiteration of that values which is done every year. A means to reinforce the racial memory.

Holi festival is primarily the spring festival. The religious importance was added much later. In fact the religious significance of Holi is very little unlike Shivratri or Diwali etc.

Ganesh Puja became a massive celebration during the Freedom struggle when Lokmanya Tilak used it as a medium for political emancipation and as a tool for civil disobedience. Before that it was NEVER a public event.

We need to grant equal importance to private worship and public celebration and both have equal importance in their own space.

Well I am certain that the Imam would have made the same statement for example if Muslims started celebrating an Islamic event by women prancing around in skimpy designer events and if the event lost its religious significance. My point simply is that we get offended by every statement without checking the background of the statement. If a Hindu leader or Pandit made the same statement, would it have been offensive. Cleric Maulana Mehdi Hasan calls Navratri 'festival of devils', arrested | Zee News

Ahmedabad: Gujarat-based cleric Maulana Mehdi Hasan was on Tuesday arrested for making provocative remarks on Navratri festival and for hurting religious sentiments of one community.

The arrest was made after the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) took strong objections to the cleric's remarks and demanded strict action against him. An FIR was also registered against the cleric at the Dariyapur Police Station by a local Shiv Sena leader.

Denouncing his statement, the VHP said it is a deliberate attempt to "malign" Hinduism.
