Communists protest against Rampal...but,
No sit ins for the Buriganga river which hugs Dhaka and is all but dead now.

No sit ins to demand the tanneries which are polluting the air & water of Dhaka, get moved.

There was at best 25% people in this protest who genuinely care and have protested not just this but also other commercial projects in and around the Sundarbans....the rest are all clueless gits.

Tbf, there have also been some Indian environmental groups who have spoken out against this power plant.

But, I'll continue to point out the hypocrisy of the local let's jump on the latest bandwagon protestors.

This is from the blog of Anu Muhammad...I'm sure the deshi 'environmentalists' know who he is....

Sundarban, a combination of rich eco-systems for humanity, is the largest mangrove forest in the world. For Bangladesh, it is much more — a question of life and death. It has protected millions of people from so many natural disasters. The forest is now under threat because of profit-seeking groups at home and abroad.
Amid popular protests and despite expert opinion against the establishment of a coal-fired power plant at Rampal, which is close to Sundarban, the Bangladesh government and India’s National Thermal Power Corporation keep working on the establishment of the plant. The government also allowed a Bangladeshi company, Orion, in the past year to build another power plant near the forest. On March 19, the government signed a memorandum of understanding with China to set up another 1,320MW coal-fired power plant in Patuakhali, a location that is also close to Sundarban.

As you can see...this isn't the only power plant being built 'near' the Sundarbans...

But, this is the one that HAS to be stopped.

After the Japanese accident, BD government decided to go for more modern reactor despite the increase in cost.

The site is too far away from the sea to be affected by any Tsunami like in Japan, and coupled with it's modern safety systems, it is highly unlikely any major accident will happen.

@Mohammed Khaled : I think as part of the agreement, the Russians will take care of waste disposal.
Yep

Saw their protest that day and it was fun to chew tear gas. Closely observe the scenario. Police stops vehicle movement from Paltan area to Shahbagh and allows the rally and guards it. You will see there were more police than the protestors. After they crossed their limit of Shahbagh area and approached paribagh police starts shooting tear gas and all protestors peacefully dispersed and it shows freedom of opposition political demonstration rights prevails in the country.
