Police fire teargas shells on Rampal power plant protesters -
The confrontation with law enforcers took place around 12:30pm as protesters tried to get past a police barricade in Banglamotor. The activists had brought out a rally from Press Club around 11am in a bid to take the protest to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
“Police hurled teargas canisters and charged truncheons on us as we tried to move past the police barricade in Banglamotor and march towards the PMO,” said Sabuj Shahidul Islam, member of Jatiya committee and Revolutionary Democratic Party.
He said 49 people were injured in the Banglamotor confrontation and 24 have been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
At least six protesters were taken into police custody, added Sabuj.
When contacted, Officer-in-Charge Abu Bakar Siddique of Shahbagh police station confirmed that they have detained some activists. He, however, did not give any specifics on the detainees.
Meanwhile, Socialist Party of Bangladesh (SPB) General Secretary Khalequzzaman in a statement condemned the police attack on the peaceful procession of the Committee to protect oil, gas, mineral resources, power and ports.
