At least two people were killed and 25 injured when a part of an under-construction flyover of the Delhi Metro collapsed here Sunday morning, Indian officials said. The accident occurred at around 7 a.m. in Laxmi Nagar locality of east Delhi when a machine aiding in the construction of the over-bridge collapsed, leading to a part of the flyover coming down, a Delhi Metro official said. A Blueline bus plying on route number 39, one crane of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC)and several cars are trapped under the debris of the flyover. Delhi Police has taken over the rescue operation and at least 10 people have been rescued and taken to nearby hospitals, the official added. "This has happened for the first time in the decade-old history of Delhi Metro. We are asking AFCONS (the private firm in-charge of the segment) about the engineering failure," the Indian official said.

stricter construction standards have to be imposed. in india, the condition of roads are deplorable. the number of people dying every year in motoring accidents is staggering.

safety laws are in place, but they are often ignored. we have to enforce those safety laws to ensure that road accidents are minimised.

besides, we need good infrastructure to support our growing economy. one of the key factors behind the success of all economies is good infrastructure supporting the industry. right now our roads are a liability.

I don't no about India but in Pakistan government build roads 95% in the contractors pocket 5% on the road.:coffee:

Well if you read the article you'll realize that the flyover didn't collapse, but some construction machinery collapsed and brought down part of the bridge along with it.

Su, chill out mate. This is the first time in Delhi Metro that ANY such incident has happened. And they are indeed behaving and acting like professionals. I for one have the fullest faith in them. They cannot be more responsible, they know their job well. Even AFCONS is a respectable contractor, they dont skirt over safety issues. It will be sorted out. Most likely oversight by someone. The death of people is regrettable, DMRC will definitely make sure it doesnt occur again.

Malay this is not first instance, from last few months some accidents happened, though there was no death in last incidents. No doubt they have compromised the the security standards.

Tell me about it - I was returning from work and this truly massive traffic jam was caused by this accident. Reading the local papers , it seems like a mechanical fault with the crane.

In ym time here , I notice that Delhi Metro is expanding at a rapid pace , it already functions in some areas and supposed to cover the entire delhi NCR by 2010 .

In no way should this incident slow down the pace of construction but perhaps better safety norms supervision can be incorporated.

That's right Imran, this was an unfortunate accident. Let's hope the injured recover as soon as possible.

Yes Imran, bad things and accidents happen. There is nothing wrong with posting this type of news. It is actually a good thing because this will make people more aware of the situation so they would take more care in future related events.

There has been no such instance of a major accident in the last decade of DMRC's construction activities.

in india also a good percentage goes into the contractor's pocket. in the 80s the situation was terrible. i remember they even made a hit Malayalam movie showcasing the life of a crooked contractor. what's strange is that the crooked contractor was the hero of the movie!
