Defence Minister Antony says Arjun Mk II will cost Rs 37 crore per tank

Yeah, it definetly sounds expensivee with 2.5 T-90Ms per Arjun Mk2 Tank. How good is this tank seriously compared to the Abrams, and the T-90s? Can anyone tell me how much is 37 Crores in dollars? Thanks.

Arjun squashed the T-90s in all combat trials during an intense face-off between Army and the DRDO. For once, DRDO won leaving the Indian Army top brass stuttering for answers and groping in the thin air, looking for pathetic excuses to retain their commissions from procuring foreign made weapons. Considering that T-90 is a capable and world-known tank, its defeat at the hands of Arjun MBT means that the latter definitely has substance.

Arjun's armor is much more superior along with its ground pressure, endurance and gun accuracy. However, the reason why Army cannot stop the T-90s is because the contract to make additional tanks in India locally, was signed just a year before Arjun proved itself. All this apart from Army's corrupt top brass that earns a fat commission from favoring foreign arms makers rather than choosing good defense equipment that is available locally.

When taking INR 37 crore it is around US$ 8 million.

Given the Mk.2's stated capability it is well worth a lot lf money- the amount of state-of-the-art kit on this tank is incredible and it does not come cheap. But if the IA commits to more than 124 orders the costs are likely to fall naturally (economies of scale) and this is almost a given only IA is playing its cards close to its chest. If the IA can order 1000+ T-90S and be happy with them they will be more than happy with Arjun MK.2.

.
Hm, the only good thing i see is that the money will be regulating in India's economy. It wont be going to a foreign economy.

Provided the corrupt Ministry of Defense and Army top brass realize this. Arjun was actually tailor-made for Indian conditions as the most likely places where we're going to be using them is the deserts of state of Rajasthan, the plains of Punjab and maybe lower terrains of Jammu and Kashmir as it is impossible to use tanks on the eastern front due to Himalayas.

But currently we have a government that has no capability to govern, protect and manage the country. So don't expect such rational actions from the current Government of India.

Isnt 8 Million USD to expensive?

The stuff that is coming in Arjun MK-2 is pretty tight and in line with what a cutting edge battle tank needs in today's generation and near future generation of tank warfare. All that equipment ain't cheap mate. Arjun MBT series is a 60-ton class battle tank that is being equipped with a whole lot of gizmos that'd be of a big time use.

But why only compare it to T90, imo $8 million for a tank developed and produced in India is quiet a lot and more comparable to western tanks! So is it just the small order that makes it that costly, or what is the reasons?

37 crore for Arjun Mk II??????

That is MORE than ridiculous

Well as per what DRDO says, A firm order of 500 units would allow them to break even and further orders more than that would enable to bring the costs of the tank down even further. Please remember that the Mark 2 is going to have more 93 upgrades meaning better technology and better equipment to further rev up the beast. That, my friend, costs money. How do you know Western tanks are superior to Arjun's MK-2? Have they been pitted yet? No. MK-1 itself won against T-90, a reputed tank. You're talking about a newer version here. Just because it is local made doesn't mean it is inferior. This is the stupid mentality that the Army suffers from despite the proof having shown to them.

Now coming to the lower costs of Western tanks is because they exported a large number of the same tanks to a slew of countries including a whole lot of oil sheikhdoms that buy weapons like how we buy vegetables and chicken. When you've sold that many units already, the cost per unit to local militaries would be very very low and hence you get the tag "proven" apart from the war economy mindset of NATO countries where they test their new weapons which in turn churn out export driven cash into their economy.

If sarkari idiots could actually revamp DRDO along the ranks of private firms in making, marketing and exporting Arjuns, you'd see Arjun being one of the top 5 tanks on this planet soon. It is just a clear case of red-tape socialist mentality that we had during 60s and 70s of not giving a damn to important things like publicity, marketing, advertising, quality control, PR etc that West is excellent in.

Not really. Mk II is a whole new beast with much more capabilities. Once the Army's corrupt realize the potential and capability and order close to a 1000 or more, you will see the costs coming down.

.
Well the K2 BP costs as much....heres hoping the MK II is similar in capabilities .Cus that could be justifiable price performance wise.

.
Hm, the only good thing i see is that the money will be regulating in India's economy. It wont be going to a foreign economy.

You are right...however the question is justification for the cost...

.
It may be expensive, but India is a growing economy and the $8million will stay in the India economy.

How come the Faking gov;t is MUM on that General Kapoor and his cronies.....the reason none fo these scumbags see the light of justice is that the whole freaking gov;t is corrupt....Its so obvious time to teach Indians a lesson....by chopping off heads....no more rigorous treatment for life......its not worth it.....just hang, quarter or chop off the head. Torture them before doing it.

Not that i have something against DRDO or believe we cannot make good stuff however it is hard to believe that a tank which failed almost all the tests just few years ago is suddenly so good that it can be pittet against any western tank...If we don't know that Arjun is inferior to western tank then we also don't know if it superior,no???

Now coming to the lower costs of Western tanks is because they exported a large number of the same tanks to a slew of countries including a whole lot of oil sheikhdoms that buy weapons like how we buy vegetables and chicken. You are right when you say they have exported lot of tanks...Economies of scale no doubt bring the cost down...However what we are neglecting is almost 1/3 labour cost that India enjoys which helps her make products far cheaper than western counterparts...I cannot recall any other area where India have launched a project but is this crazy costly....As said before either the number is reported wrong or has been mis-interpreted...Probably this cost involves life long maintenance etc etc...what say???

Things are not going to change in whisker...but agree with the overall point...

There are so many aspects of Arjun saga...Just calling top brass corrupt is not the entire story..You(or someone else) yourself said that Army is sucked up into T-90 because Arjun failed to deliver on time...Anyhow let's concentrate on Tank right now...

That is not the way one should look at it...Just to give an example..how about if we increase the price to $80 million...After all the money will stain in India, no???b/w at this Arjun will loose any chance to even attract a query from potential customers...

It has nothing to do with Army;s menatlity Tshering, it boils down to corruption and money. These scumbags want to get bribe money. They are willing to sacrifice India's defence for their personal gain in foreign country.

8 million? DAYYUUUUUM this tank better be worth it and how many will army order? i think we still have a couple hundred T55's in service which need to be phased out
