If Indonesia was located in South Asia then I don't think that they would be spending that much on Education Btw if we cant Protect our schools and collages from Terrorist then whats the point of spending more on education and less on Defense , It's not we peace loving Pakistanis wanted But we had no other choice left I guess. And in Long term Inshshallah we will be spending more on education and healthcare when Our economic condition will get better ............

Can any one please tell me In US dollars $ terms how much we have increased............is it approx. 6 billion USD?????????

No ! our total defence budget is now 6 billion USD after the 18% increase. It was less than 6 billion$ before the increase...:coffee:

For me this is a very bad news, what the hell are they thinking

They are thinking about the sovereignty of Pakistan. It is less of a 'chosen' move and more of a 'forced' one. India is steadily modernizing its arsenal, and is the biggest arms importer. In response to that, it is a very hard choice for the Pakistan's Defence Ministry, and I am sure they must have thought a lot before finalizing this budget.

Of course, some greed and some corruption is everywhere, but one should also look at the situation with respect to the attrition brought on by the war on terror, along with the much needed 'strategic assets & weapons' to keep India's threat away. These main two fronts, combined with the high inflation rate, more or less justify this increase in defence spending (or call it investment).

Are you serious? Are you comparing Pakistan with Indonesia? What threat does Indonesia face?

If you havent noticed Pakistan is between India (the country that we went to 4wars against, one war with India caused the breakup of Pakistan, and long-lasting territorial disputes with) and war-torn Afghanistan (the country where NATO and the US are making war plans and attacking Pakistani territory with drones on a regular basis). Not to mention that Afghanistan was the only country on earth that protested against Pakistan's entrance to the United Nations during the independence of Pakistan. There is threats from both sides of Pakistan's border. Indonesia is surrounded by water, it doesnt have to worry about mean neighbours.

Pakistan is in a tough neighbourhood and it needs a strong defense.

Learn from the speeches made by the founder of the nation, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

Address to the Establishment of H.M.P.S. “Dilawar” on 23rd January,

Gentlemen,

The first World War of 1914-18 was fought to end war. Its horrors quickened the conscience of the world and set statesmen thinking to devise ways and means of outlawing war. This led to the birth of the League of Nations and the idea of collective security, but the League of Nations proved only a pious hope. It failed to avert World War No. 2. The destruction caused by the first world war pales into insignificance as compared to the devastation and havoc resulting from the last world war and now with the discovery of the Atom Bomb, one shudders to think of the pattern of future wars. The war weary humanity in watching with fear and hope the evolution of the United Nations Organization for on its ability to successfully deal with the cause of war and threats to world peace will depend the salvation of mankind and the future of civilization. Pakistan which has been recently admitted to the United Nations Organization will do everything in its power to strengthen the Organization and help it in the achievement of the ideals which have been set up as its goal. While giving the fullest support to the principles of the United Nations Charter we cannot afford to neglect our defenses. However strong the United Nations Organization might be, the primary responsibility for the defense of our country will rest with us and Pakistan must be prepared for all eventualities and dangers. The weak and the defenseless, in this imperfect world, invite aggression from others. The best way in which we can serve the cause of peace is by removing temptation from the path of those who think that we are weak, and therefore, they can bully or attack us. That temptation can only be removed if we make ourselves so strong that nobody dare entertain any aggressive designs against us. Pakistan is still in its infancy and so is its Navy and other branches of the armed forces. But this infant means to grow up and God willing will grow up much sooner than many people thinks.

Everyone of you has an important role to play in strengthening the defense of the country and your watchwords should be faith, discipline and self-sacrifice. You will have to make up for the smallness of your size by your courage and selfless devotion to duty for it is not life that matters but the courage, fortitude and determination you bring to it.

I see some of you, who constitute the bodyguard at present provided at the Governor-general’s residence, practically everyday. Today I see you in much large numbers and I am greatly impressed by your bearing and turn out. You must remember that your Headquarters Karachi, the gateway to Western Pakistan, besides being the port of call of ships of other nations, is also on the air route from the West to the East. People from all over the globe pass through Karachi and the eyes of the world are on you. I trust that, by your behavior and deportment you will never let Pakistan down, but would keep up the best traditions of the service and maintain high the honor and prestige of Pakistan as one of the greatest nations of the world.

I have a question, if pak doctrine is a war of attrition and purely defensive, how is this hike justified?

Defence budget up by 18 percent

* NA committee on defence okays Rs 500 billion for next financial year

* Members of committee praise Pakistan Army for sacrifices in war against terrorism

ISLAMABAD: National Assembly’s (NA) Standing Committee on Defence has approved defence budget of over Rs 500 billion for the next financial year, against Rs 442 billion of the current year.

The committee met at the Parliament House on Thursday under its Chairperson, Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho, to review different proposals presented by the Ministry of Defence in connection with the defence budget for the next fiscal year.

Defence Secretary, Athar Ali Khan, and senior officers of the GHQ briefed the committee about the budget and requirements of defence institutions in detail.

Others who turned up at the meeting included MNAs Dr Talat Mahesar, Malik Nauman Ahmed Langerial, Mir Amir Ali Khan Magsi, Sardar Talib Hassan Nakai, Syed Haider Ali Shah, Jawad Hussain and Shagufta Sadiq. The defence secretary and GHQ officials told the committee that the defence budget for the current financial year stood at Rs 442 billion, while security expenses were far greater.

Sources told Online that officials of the Ministry of Defence told the committee that only $900 million had been provided to army out of its due share of $7.50 billion under the Coalition Support Fund (CSF).

“Not a penny has been given to army out of the funds received under the CSF during the current year,” the committee was informed.

Officials told the committee that defence requirements of air force and navy had increased and new equipment would have to be procured keeping in view the prevailing defence scenario. Members of the committee paid rich tributes to the armed forces for the unprecedented services rendered by them during war on terror, saying the whole nation stood by them for the sake of defence and integrity of the country.

Talking to media men after the meeting, Dr Azra said defence requirements of the armed forces were reviewed at length during the meeting and approval had been accorded for an increase by 18 percent in the defence budget for the upcoming fiscal year in the wake of growing inflation.

She told journalists that 25 percent of defence budget was spent on the purchase of defence equipment and needs of the army had increased due to war on terror. “Therefore, the decision has been taken to enhance the defence budget,” she added. agencies

I say more Taxes...Pakistan has to impose taxes I've yet to see Govt increase road taxes..No bank withdrawl taxes? I mean there are things atleast 3 crore people can afford to pay. I can fetch you list of many things that 20% of Pakistan would be willing to pay.

.
don't know either to celebrate this news or get sad after listening to what is happening with HEC

.
the problem for pakistan is not the defence budget going up .....it is that the elite of the country dont pay taxes....if a foreign european prime minister says that the elite should honestly pay their full taxes....you really ought to be curious!!....and very sad by the stoog of a govt we have who are dissolving the HEC....now millions of degrees and diplomas can be defunct.

Well you are missing the point..With good education you are eliminating ignorance which is fuel to these terrorist organizations. So in effect you are not only advancing your country but also eliminating the base for terrorism.

to be able to maintain a minium deterrence level /defence posture agaist a adversary who is on a spending spree...

Agree with Omar1984 completely.
We need to spend more on education, but our defense should remain a primary focus.
And if India honestly believes in its own statement that 'Pakistan only perceives India as an enemy', then why do our friends across the border still have such a large presence on the border with Pakistan ?

Side Note: Change the captial from Islamabad back to Karachi and do what Quaid did, i.e. to approach foreign investors directly and encourage them to invest in Pakistan. Apply open-skies policy to the airport there to entice more transit routes through KHI.

You have nukes! What else do you need. Change the doctrine to, "if one Indian soldier crosses the border, you launch nukes" end of the story. It seems like Pakistan is still running after the dream of militarily annexing Kashmir.

I totally agree, but bhayia if there is no country left then what education going to do? I would say 50-50 is pretty good option. Look at India they just buying buying, we can't just sit and do nothing. We are small country, we need to protect country first.

Only if the leaders of Pakistan had the capability to decide what was best for them to develop as a nation..instead they insisted upon fighting sometimes openly, sometimes via proxy war against a neighbour which has always been more powerful....
