Deep-sea port to be built in Matarbari: Nasrul Hamid

Awami league stalling deep seaport in Sonadia for last 10 years is NOT a progress. You indian buffalo acting like Japanese wagyu verity, does not cut it.
You must yourself invest $10 billion to build up Sonadia Port or you can ask Uncle Trump to lend this money to BD. this will be a great service to BD.

China's terms were more than likely unacceptable to BD if you look at the deal offered to Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
I think after Padma Bridge costs are finished end of this year, BD should build a deep sea port from it's own pocket. Over the long term it will be a very good investment.

Port is already under construction in Matherbari. It will be extended up to Sonadia. Parts of the ports could be built on PPP basis, like a specialized container terminal where foreign companies including China can take part. They are already taking part in Pyra.

Besides there are 3 more ports are already in making.
1) Extension of Chittagong port.
2) Mirersarai Deep sea port for SEZ.
3) Pyra port.

Pardon my ignorance but why do we need that many(around 3-4)deep sea ports?

Isn't there any other alternative for us with natural deep harbor in south side of BD

Matarbari (which is in Southern Bangladesh, a few miles north of Cox's Bazaar) has an average 15 to 18 meter draft (depth of harbor in port).

Payra has almost the same draft as Chittagong (10-12 meter draft) but it is possible to deep-dredge Payra so certain channels can be used by deeper draft vessels. Jan De Nul (Belgian firm that does this worldwide) have already started work there for capital dredging.

Also - container ship designs are rapidly changing to accommodate low-draft ports like CTG or Payra.

but vai as i said payra needs continuous dredging, that's why asked if isn't there any alternative govt can find with natural harbor in south-west where mongla and payra are situated. and are you talking about foreign container ship's design??

Pyra was built to satisfy regional pressure. It will not be commercially viable to start with. But if it could solve some of the poverty in those region then I have no problem. But if it becomes another Mongla then there is problem.

Ditto, that's why i was asking why all these deep sea ports. The entire project looks shady AF to me.

No, Payra may not need continuous dredging if two north-south parallel sea walls are built from the sea-shore. This will inhibit the silt to accumulate in the shipping route. Irrespective of what people say about giving employment, Payra, being in the central south is a good decision. Even many of the export/import goods for the country's eastern part may use Payra. Mongla is a little too far, but it may be used at a later time when Khulna/Jessore areas are more industrialized.

I dont think this area has the similar silt problem like ganges brahmaputra basin. It can be easily dredged for deep sea port as needed.

I just do not know if there are long sea walls in the planning to keep the silts away from the navigation channel. I was just giving a suggestion and believe that it is possible to keep the channel deep by building two sea walls instead of constant dredging throughout the year.

Indian company should have suggested this. We have to understand that silts accumulate from the flow of water mainly from the north, and a little from the sideways. But, only a slight quantity may come from the south. But, even the northward flow of silt due to sea wave can be minimized by providing a sea gate facing either east or west.

Considering the corrupt mindset of BD politicians, I believe that they will prefer dredging because this way they can somehow make money, and the foreign dredging company would not suggest otherwise because they can continuously get money by dredging.

I have been to Nigeria two times. It earns dollar by exporting oil. It then invites foreign civil engineering companies to plan, design or construct many projects. The foreign contractors come, do the work and take away the money. Nigerian govt could not build the proper system so that its own engineers are able to design, design and construct the govt projects.

BD's poor girls work day and night on only a small salary. The GoB asks the foreigners to do all the development works with this money from its own pocket that it earned by exporting the goods produced by the country's poor daughters, pretending it is doing development works. Is it development? We are following the worst examples of Nigeria.

Is there anyone who would say this is the correct approach and even China developed similarly?
