Talks set for May will end six-month freeze in negotiations.

Peace negotiations over Cyprus between the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot administrations are to resume on May 15, the UN's Special Advisor Espen Barth Eide has said.

Eide's remarks came on Monday after a meeting between Turkish Cypriot President Mustafa Akinci and Nicos Anastasiades, the Greek Cypriot leader, on the island.

He said the two leaders would decide on May 15 as to how and how often the negotiations would continue.

Eide said the meeting was held in a "very" positive atmosphere and the two leaders agreed to support the process in "a strong and resolved way".

The peace talks have been on hold since October.

Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots have tried to find a comprehensive settlement to renew their partnership since a joint government on the island collapsed in 1963.

The island has been divided into Turkish Cypriot government in the northern third and Greek Cypriot administration in the southern two-thirds after a 1974 military coup by Greece was followed by the intervention of Turkey as a guarantor power in Cyprus.

Peace talks were unilaterally suspended by the Greek Cypriot side last October after Turkey issued a navigational telex on behalf of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus for seismic research off the coast of Cyprus.'' Anadolu Agency

Would a possible reunity of Island weaken our inflence or strenghten?
I will say I am not sure but I feel more likely to strenghten when our reach, capabilities (in every aspects) and geographical location be measured.

.
If reunification is agreed I hope we'll close our bases there.

.
It's faster to recognize the northern part and accept a two state solution. And lets nature run it's course, if north is meant to survive and grow it'll happen or it'll be "consumed" by south.

I think it'll grow, bigger, and better, and EU won't have to waste more time on this. and UK can close it's bases :P

IMO, if they unite, Turks will be minority and probably the state of affairs will be mainly ruled by the Greeks. If that happens, some years or a decade everything will be nice and dandy as a show, but then Greek oppression will slowly start after some years/decades, i mean the typical greek behavior is a given plus they even tried to wipe out the Turks there not too long ago, let's not be naive and rosy, and Turkey and the Turks over there will be back at square one if such oppression starts to happen. Also once they unite, EU will have more influence than Turkey there, so it seems to me Turkey basically gives its children to the EU orphanage and cant get them back later. Am more against it than for it.

@egolfs

Mate, you are from Cyprus, right ? What is your opinion in this whole situation ?

As long as it's ruled equally and fairly it's fine. If not then it'll just be another invasion and we won't stop with half of the island this time.

asking for a 50/50 rule, when there is imbalance is definitely not something the cypriots will accept, and the turks won't accept being subject to greek rule without having right to veto would literally mean that the turks can be pressured out of cyprus. This game of negotiating is not a win-win solution at all. And it'd have been better if Turkey could have raised it image and strenght on all easterns fronts instead of having the destructive process Erdogan has. And easied recognition of northern Cyprus first with our own turkish brother countries and then move on. Ressources, Economy, Military power are all needed to get what you want, just look at the US.

.
We can't make a decision by ourselves on Cyprus after all what the Cyrptiots wants matters the most but the island is very very important for our national security in Mediterranean. I'm all for re-unification if we get a base or two.

.
I don't think so but wonder what makes you think that way? I of course hope UK out of Cyprus though.
1) We are one of the three "guarantee powers" of Cypriot independence. But there's no point in guaranteeing something if it isn't threatened
2) I don't think we any longer have the economic and military strength to be a Middle Eastern power so having a strategically located base doesn't really amount to much.

UK has a longer story than a guarantee power in Cyprus and UK does not guarantee Cyprus already, in fact.
Any longer? Who knows? Thank you.

We actually considered war with Turkey in 1974 but the US warned us off.

Cyprus has a chronic water shortage, Turkey is building a water pipeline to supply northern part but there were rumors that South would also join, if that happens Turkish influence will stay whether Cyprus re-unites or not.
Right now Greece is delivering water with tanker's but this has a limit, a pipeline is neccessary for the future of Cyprus.
