That is a good argument for petrol but not for food or medicines. If many people can't afford petrol for private transport, that is a good thing as it reduces the pressure on foreign exchange. Time to dust up bicycles or good pair of walking shoes or even horse carts in rural areas.Those who can afford the new prices will go on using it. Those who cannot afford them will have to find alternatives, or learn to do without. That is as simple as it gets, on both the domestic, and international, levels.
