Dam Pakistan

Do we have any experts on dams in this forum, I mean working knowledge, and education ?

What is your expert question?

In a simple words, generally we build dams on natural water traps or narrow pass, next to huge water catchment areas.
The dam part comprise rows of spill ways and integrated with water turbines.
Opening the gates of spill ways start making electricity.
Due to huge catchment area we have control over energy in shape of its height potential and water too.
In absence of dams those natural catchment areas were never filled as their was never was a block, hence habitat may come under water due to building of dam but water never over flow the dam or catchment area.

Answer: 40,000 - 100,000 MW based on google search
1. Hydroelectric potential of Pakistan, esp in north regions near Himalayas.

Hydropower: way out of energy crisis | Pakistan Water Gateway

The single renewable energy resource that Pakistan possesses in abundance is hydropower, the most environmental friendly, cheapest source of energy. It has a potential of more than 41,722MW. Despite this, Pakistan now is faced with a most serious energy shortfall. The acute shortage of electricity has resulted in loadshedding during the current summer season, costing the economy millions of rupees. The installed power generation capacity at the end of 2005 was 19,560MW, of which 65 per cent was thermal, 33 per cent was hydroelectric and 2.4 per cent was nuclear. The 33 per cent share of hydroelectric power amounts to only 6,595MW.

Iran, an arid country, produces 10,000 MW of hydroelectric power - Pakistan only 6500 MW ? Much more work needs to be done in Pakistan.

Pakistan should put its eggs in two baskets for its future energy needs:
- hydroelectric power for the north/central areas (incl Islamabad)
- coal for the south/central areas (incl Karachi)

What is your qualification to claim this?

Dams will bring boost to agriculture, plantation and habitat.
It will save our infrastructure from flooding.

My opinion is not my personal, and does not apply to Pakistan only.

What do you mean qualification?
It is well known that dams prevent marine life from using the rivers, and it destroys habitats of animals.

yes it does provide benifits for people, but remember, we have to share this land with all the Animals and plants too.

There are other options, unfortunately Pakistani people are not mature enough to seek them out.

Building dams could no doubt be the solution to many of Pakistans’problems. However despite the fact that I am in the strongly pro-dam lobby, I must admit that there are ecological consequences to the Dams. I have been following debates on the Kalabagh dam going back to 1970’s. Main objectors are the KP & Sind.

KP concern is that storage of water at Kalabagh will raise subterranean water level adversely affecting the fertility of large tracts of arable land in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province; thus cancelling out many benefits of the dam.

Sind on the other hand argue that flow of water below Kotri barrage; which is already at very low level during winter months; will be reduced further. As it is, Badin is losing arable land to the sea because large number of barrages and Tarbela Dam has drastically reduced flow of Indus River.

Annual fresh flood water pushes back the slowly encroaching Arabian Sea. Kalabagh Dam is meant to store the very same flood water for use during winter months reducing the water flow into the sea and worsening the plight of Sind costal lands.

There is little doubt that IMO benefits of Kalabagh Dam far outweigh possible adverse effects; both the KP & the Sind have genuine reservations and riding rough shod over smaller provinces is not conducive to long term stability of the federation.

^^ Sir with proper water management risks of rise in water table in immediate areas can be reduced.

It s not must that we fill this dam for winter. We can keep it partially filled. It is a hilly area any way.

We don't have to see this dam as an independent source of supply. It will be hooked to the national grid.

The money it generate will change the life of surrounding areas, it will creat jobs for the locals and national level.

Sindh will have no water issues. Instead they will get water exactly when they needed and as much they needed.

We will have more irrigation land available in Sindh and more uncultivated land can be cultivated.

Most of above we can regulate the flood waters also.

the dam will destroy indus delta along with the fishing sanctuary associated with it, maybe the mangroves too

we need to be very careful, the indus dolphin is alreay on its way to extinction

and solar and nuclear power, we are being too dumb about our real needs and having four useless reactors all for military use, spending our valuablke money just for making more nukes

^^ How does water dam effect all you mention?

With dam we just get control on water!

This will not be a new phenomenon, neither it is the only dam in the entire world.

We loose human lives in floods which are more important than wild life.

Dolphin's extinction is related to weather changes. HARRP & X-37B need to rest.

what natural habitat is destroyed with dam?!!
infact it impoves the situation in indus system..

kalabagh dam can produce most energy due to amount of water avaliable.
another cheaper option is the banji dam which can achieve 7200 MW energy

dolphins can be saved with dams ..they are dying out due to lack of water in winter due to lack of dams!!!!!!
