KARACHI: Collectorate of Customs Preventive conducted a raid in Karachi’s S.I.T.E area and seized a huge cache of goods bound for Lahore on Wednesday.
According to the Chief Collector Customs, Zahid Khokar the container was bound for Lahore’s dry port where the duty was to be paid, however the container was opened and the higher value goods were being replaced with products of lesser value.
During the raid, officials seized 28,000 mobile phones, 47,000 contact lenses, 1,700 tablet computers, 122 DVD players, 214 LCDs as well expensive perfumes and washing machines.
Khokar told journalists, that this haul was the biggest seizure in recent times adding that criminal investigation has been initiated against the bonded carrier and the importer.
Three employees of the bonded carrier have been detained while raids are being conducted to arrest the importer.
According to Khokar the people involved were hoping to save millions of rupees in duties by replacing the expensive goods with low quality products before the container was to be presented for payment of duties.
