Cruise missile defense capability
Last century was victim of nuclearization of south Asia, and hence ballistic missile became prime asset of nuclear deterrent for twice of country. But now in 21st century doctrine is shifting at great speed, as India moves towards BMD system and near to field BDM and phase two of BMD will start very soon. And also Detection of ballistic missile is very easy due to satellites, sophisticates radar systems.

Now doctrine is shifting towards cruise missiles. They fly very low, stealthier than full flag a/c due to small size, nuclear capable, and identification of such missiles is really hard. Cruise missiles are highly cost effective compare to ballistic missiles. Cruise missile can be used for targeting key strategic targets & even for nuclear deterrence. Pakistan inducted Babur(haft7) in its arsenal in 2010. They also have air launched variant of it Ra’ad(haft8) and Working on submarine launched & ship launch variants of missile. They completed several successful test in past. Now I think as we are near to field BMD shield, cruise missiles posses’ real threat to India in any case of war.

Current feasibility of cruise missile deterrence
India currently uses older variants of the Russian SAMs mainly SA6 gainful. Few key strategic points are secure by much better Spyder system.
INDIASAMNETEW.jpg

Although that’s doesn’t show India’s original SAM network, but it is enough to show the Holes in SAM network of India. Cruise missiles fly at very low altitude & have train hugging capability. Curvature of earth and shadow regions of radar gives opportunity to cruise missiles which are unrealistic in ballistic missiles. India also has 3 awacs systems which multiply its monitoring capability.

As per state India doesn’t have sophisticated defensive approach towards cruise missile defense. So India must need to follow counter offensive and counter defensive approach for cruise missile. Prioritized and target possible enemy offensive system, so that their capability of offence will cripple in initaia phase of war. Sukhoi 30 mki, mirag2000, and Jaguar give India the capability of counter offensive approach inside enemy territory in intial phase of war. Now in counter defensive approach, centralization of all radar and SAM network is great doctrine. As all civilian radar system are now integrated to IAF network. So strategy should be focus on destruction of missile within border by aircrafts in flight rather than relay on CIWS and QRSAM. Mki give India feasibility due to their radar. It can work as mini awacs in war and can identify enemy cruise missiles, Once missiles are identified than they can destroyed by mean of a/c(want to illustrate especially AJT).

Cruise missile doctrine also based on what type on platform is used by enemy. So far 4 kind of weapon delivery methods are in world.

Aircraft launch – In this doctrine speed is a key, a/c must need to go as near/inside to border so that inner areas could be targeted. No surprise element and highly venerable to enemy attack. Good rate of fire could be achieved.

Surface vessel launch – As everybody know, no surprise element but can fire salve/combo of missiles. These are also highly protected, but cannot get near to sea lane enemy.

TEL launch – Main asset of army for cruise missiles. These can be put much near to border without detections and can surprise with salve/combo of missile, although they neither have speed nor defensive approach & highly venerable after detection.

Submarine launch – They are full of surprise but lack in fire rate and if detected than surely dead.

FUTURE PROSPECTIVE

As DRDO completed work on BMD, now they already started work on cruise missile defnse.
But first illustrate other assets and doctrine for cruise missile defense.

IAF is inducting more awacs as well as DRDO awcas in large numbers. So that surely will improve monitoring capability of India. Rather than that P8I are also inducted in IN which increase 24*7 hour monitoring capability, which make enemy submarine highly venerable near our sea lane.
IAF also purchasing Rafale, which will give so much counter offensive capability to India which is still not comparable by any fighter in IAF. Maitri and Barak8 SAM are also under development, which will increase India’s capability to counter cruise missile and give much bigger advantages than vintage soviet sam. Again super mki’s radar will be increase its field of view & average power, as a mini awacs.

These all asset although are very effective against cruise missile defense approach, but also very costly. As in last century when USA fielded huge arsenal of cruise missile, USSR follow defensive approach & and put large number of S300 system to defend its land. But that approach was ineffective due to high cost.

To counter cruise missile you should have complete monitoring capability. So DRDO is developing aerostat for low cost solution. This aerostat can be easily fitted with radar which can be use in monitoring of border for any possible attack. As this aerostat will fly upto 5km height, so that surly gonna challenge cruise missiles, as earth curvature & radar shadow region is not problem. Except that these aerostat would be useful in surveillance, intelligence, and gamming enemy radars. So combo of this system gives India feasibility of monitoring its border 24*7 with very low cost.

ISRO also plan to send a satellite in geostationary orbit over India by 2015, which will have high resolution camera. That will cover whole south asia. That can detect any fire/fire in subcontinent and can be zoom if needed. Although it is purely civilian project but during war it can be used for detecting possible sites of missiles in nighbour. That increase IAF counter offensive approach.

 nothing useful... ridden with spelling mistakes

:P my english is too bad, sorry for that.

No matter how efficient is the BMD system or CMD system, some missiles or cruise missile are likely to pass the BMD orCMD. Let us hope that Indian defences only miss the dummy missiles launched at the Indian cities or strategic points.

No matter what the Israelis claim, they only had 85% success rate.

There is only one way that Indian counter strike force is ready and waiting. It will incinerate the adversary before it launches the second strike. Pakistan military, politicians and public's knowledge is more than sufficient to prevent the first strike. After all nobody wants to die first and Pakistani knowledge that they would not be rule India from the Ramparts of Red Fort after one single bomb succeeds whether they explode it over Pakistani territory or Indian territory.

That knowledge is critical to future Indian security.

You are exactly right, thats why I also emphasis on counter offensive element, rather than just relay on defense.

well there are other things aswell why do you forget the Phalcons, israeli Aerostat and Ground based ASEA radars + The latest French and indegenous Indra Series of Radars + many others and we also have large nos of AA betteries like PUM 300, 400, Spyder, Akash and some more Russian and French + Israeli systems + we have the SAT all of which moniters the pak airspace 24/7

I didn't forget anything in my analysis. Just didn't illustrate them.
Phalcons, spyder, ground based radars are in my post. What I was trying to say we need to make a hole system which (include all things ground base, awacs, fighters) will able to monitor the threat, response in little time and highly effective at low cost. Just consider a cruise missile with nuclear warhead approaching towards Delhi, SAM system is able to destroy it, than what, SAM did its job. Unfortunately was unable to protect Delhi.

Ground base radar are indeed good option, but they have much higher shadow regions from which a cruise missile/drone can take profit. Thats what I am trying to say.

We don't have 24*7 motioning capability by SAT and dont think that we can achieve this near future. Rather than that thats too costly. Although the satellite which I illustrate in artical is indeed 24*7 system and provide more feasibility in response of nuclear threat.

yes.....................

The grammatical errors are inconsequential, the amateur analysis is better than what most of us, wait, let me speak for myself..what I can come up with. Thumbs up brother. :enjoy:
