I recommend to everyone who doubts in the legality of residents choice of the return of the Crimea to Russia - Go to the Crimea and talk with the locals.
I was in the Crimea several times and I know that the locals have always separated themselves from Ukraine and identified themselves with Russia.
In fact, they considered themselves as occupied territory until 2014. And now they are free and their old dream come true.
Once again - if someone does not believe - then go to Crimea and see for yourself.

If the Soviet Union still existed, no Crimean resident would not have thought about how to go from one Soviet republic to another. It was a mere formality, as the Soviet Union was a single state.

Exactly. So how come they considered themselves as occupied territory? And if single state, how come there are seperate entries in UN for Ukrain and Belarus, besides Soviet Union? Also of interest is the transfer of Crimea in 1954, shortly after Stalin's death, but before Krushchev in denounced Stalin's use of repression in 1956 and eased repressive controls over party and society (destalinization).

Crimea was part of Russia SSR until 1930s or 40s when it was given to Ukraine SSR. Surely it didn't matter then as they were 1 united country but obviously Crimeans didn't expect the break up 60 years hence. They didn't get a chance to decide and choose if they can go back with Russia in 1991.

It did not have to do with Ukraine and Belarus being both founding republics and unitary states?

Crimea belongs to Russia by right of Russia Turkey war. Turkey ceded Crimea to Russia by Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca.
