China has listed Pakistan as its priority as Beijing pledged $100 million to COVAX -- a worldwide initiative aimed at equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines -- for distributing vaccines to developing countries, said China's Ambassador to Pakistan Nong Rong on Tuesday.

Pakistan has so far received 5.5 million doses of the Moderna vaccine and 2.4 million doses of AstraZeneca along with over 100,000 doses of Pfizer as part of the COVAX effort.

In a tweet, envoy Nong shared that the first batch of vaccines provided to COVAX by Beijing is being shipped to Pakistan, which has been 'put' as China's priority. "Our commitment: making vaccines a global public good, and put Pakistan as our priority," the ambassador wrote on his Twitter handle.

BEIJING, Aug 10 (APP):A shipment of nearly 980,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines donated by domestic drug maker China National Biotech Group through COVAX was transported to Pakistan as part of China’s effort to help the rest of the world tackle the COVID-19 pandemic, the company said.

The doses, the first sent in a 170 million dose agreement, were packaged at a Beijing unit of CNBG, a subsidiary of State-owned Sinopharm. They were sent to cold storage at an airport for a security check and customs clearance.

With the first batch of our COVID-19 vaccines under COVAX having been shipped, the company is gradually delivering on its promise to provide vaccines to COVAX, CNBG said in a statement.

According to China Daily, COVAX is an international program that distributes vaccines to low- and middle-income countries to boost global vaccine equity.

The inactivated COVID-19 vaccine developed by CNBG’s Beijing unit received emergency use authorization from the World Health Organization – necessary for COVAX suppliers – on May 7, and the first batch allocated for the program rolled off the production line on June 1.

On July 7, CNBG’s Beijing unit signed an agreement with the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization, or Gavi, a co-leader of COVAX, pledging to supply more than 170 million doses to the program.

Under the agreement, the company will deliver 60 million doses to COVAX from July through October, and Gavi has the option to purchase 60 million doses in the fourth quarter and another 50 million in the first half of next year.

CNBG said that after its second production line obtains WHO approval, it will provide the line’s annual 1 billion dose capacity to COVAX.

Liu Jingzhen, chairman of Sinopharm, CNBG’s parent company, said recently that CNBG is the only entity in the world that owns the intellectual property and has created three COVID-19 vaccines making use of two different technologies.

The company’s COVID-19 vaccines have gained market approval in eight countries and obtained emergency use authorization or market access in 93 countries, regions, and international organizations.

The Sinovac Biotech vaccine has also received WHO approval to supply COVAX. The Chinese company has developed an inactivated COVID-19 vaccine and will ship the initial 50 million doses from July to September. Gavi is authorized to buy 330 million more doses from it by the first half of next year.

China’s State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said during a recent online forum on vaccine cooperation that China will deliver more than 100 million doses to COVAX by the end of October and make good use of the $100 million donations to the program, announced by President Xi Jinping to benefit developing economies.

Pakistan reports over 100 COVID-19 deaths for first time in three months

ISLAMABAD: The fourth wave of the coronavirus pandemic has continued its upward trajectory as Pakistan reported on Thursday more than 100 deaths from the virus for the first time in nearly three months.
The country last reported more than 100 deaths in a single day on May 20, 2021.

As per the statistics of the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), as many as 102 people lost their lives to the coronavirus in the last 24 hours, taking the countrywide death tally to 24,187.

The stats said that 59,397 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours across the country. Of these, 4,934 came back positive.

The country’s COVID-19 positivity rate now stands at 8.30%.

On the other hand, health experts have raised concerns over the mushrooming cases as Pakistan has reported 1,085,294 COVID-19 cases so far.

The number of active cases stands at 85,633, with the nationwide recoveries rising to 975,474.
Overall, coronavirus cases across Pakistan haven't declined or risen significantly, however, Sindh lifted its lockdown Monday.

Pakistan's active Covid-19 cases reach three-month high at 86,236

On August 11, the country reported 85,633 active cases, also the highest number in over three months. As per the latest data shared by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), Pakistan reported 4,619 coronavirus cases during the last 24 hours at a positivity ratio of 7.76%.

A total of 59,504 people were tested across the country during the last 24 hours. The virus has so far infected 1,089,913 people in Pakistan since the outbreak last year. The disease also claimed 79 more lives, taking the number of fatalities to 24,266.

During the last 24 hours, Sindh reported 1,783 infections and 39 deaths, Punjab reported 1,163 Covid-19 cases and 15 deaths, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reported 682 coronavirus cases and 20 deaths, while Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Islamabad, and Gilgit-Baltistan collectively reported 936 infections and five deaths.

Overall, there are 4,656 critical cases out of which the condition of 72 people has deteriorated during the last 24 hours.

As Pakistan speeds up its vaccination drive, it has so far administered 41.5 million doses of the coronavirus vaccine. During the last 24 hours, a total of 803,603 doses were administered.

Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives Asad Umar has encouraged the citizens to vaccinate themselves.

Pakistan has been using Sinopharm, Moderna, Pfizer, CanSino and Sinovac vaccines to inoculate its population. The government aims to vaccinate 70 million people against coronavirus by end of this year.

PIA will run eight special flights to airlift 10 million doses of the Covid vaccine from China


PIA will run eight special flights to airlift 10 million doses of the Covid vaccine from China to Pakistan on Thursday.

PIA Country Manager for China Qadir Bux Sangi told APP that some of the flights of the national flag carrier will leave Beijing Airport later today, with the Chinese vaccines onboard.

“So far PIA has brought around 35 million doses of the Sinopharm and CanSino vaccines to Pakistan from China”, he said.

The government intends to achieve its target of administering 70 million jabs to people through its nationwide vaccination campaign.

National Command and Operation Center chief Asad Umar took to his official Twitter handle to announce that 40 million jabs against Covid have been administered across the country so far.

“The last crore [10 million] took only 9 working days to administer”, he said on Thursday.


Asad Umar encouraged Pakistan to keep it up and make itself “safe from this disease”.

In the past 24 hours, 102 people have died all over the country due to Covid, with 4934 cases surfacing.

Statistics show that 59,000 tests for the virus were conducted in the past day. The positivity rate remains 8.3%.

Rapid PCR testing begins at airports across Pakistan

Services of UAE-accredited labs have been made available at all international airports, says CAA spokesperson

Owing to difficulties being faced by UAE-bound passengers, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said on Friday said that the counters for conducting rapid polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests for Covid-19 have become functional at all international airports of the country.

According to Express News, a spokesman for the authority said that the services of UAE-accredited Pakistani labs have been made available at the airports.

The spokesperson said that the counters have started taking rapid PCR tests for the passengers departing from Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore, Multan, Quetta, Peshawar and Faisalabad airports.

ISLAMABAD: Another 73 people breathed their last and 4,786 were infected by coronavirus throughout Pakistan during the last 24 hours (Friday), showed the figures released by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on Saturday morning.

As per the NCOC figures, after the addition of 73 new deaths, the overall toll has now surged to 24,339 whereas the number of total infections now stood at 1,094,699 after adding the fresh 4,786 cases.

During the last 24 hours (Friday), a total of 59,136 tests were conducted throughout Pakistan whereas the positivity ratio stood at 8.09 percent.

During the last 24 hours (Friday), as many as 4,343 patients have recovered from the virus whereas the total recoveries stood at 983,754. As of Friday, the total count of active cases in the country was recorded at 86,606.

As many as 409,578 coronavirus cases have so far been confirmed in Sindh, 370,599 in Punjab, 151,466 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 93,339 in Islamabad, 31,507 in Balochistan, 28,982 in Azad Kashmir and 9,228 in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Moreover, 11,329 individuals have lost their lives to the pandemic in Punjab so far, 6,384 in Sindh, 4,640 in KP, 830 in Islamabad, 662 in Azad Kashmir, 332 in Balochistan and 162 in Gilgit Baltistan.

Pakistan reports decline in COVID-19 cases

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan reported a COVID-19 positivity ratio below 7% for the first time in over two weeks amid the fourth wave of the pandemic.

Pakistan witnessed a significant decline in coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours, with the country reporting a positivity ratio of 6.8%.
According to the statistics issued by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC),

Pakistan reported 3,711 new cases of the virus Sunday after the country conducted 54,204 tests.


The NCOC reported 67 deaths over the past 24 hours.

The last time Pakistan reported a coronavirus positivity ratio was almost 20 days ago, on July 27 when the country reported a positivity ratio of 6.6%.


NCOC issues special guidelines for Muharram

As Pakistan continued to report a rise in coronavirus cases, the NCOC issued special guidelines for people to guard themselves against the coronavirus during the month of Muharram.


The guidelines have been issued keeping in view the various recommendations forwarded by the ulema.

The NCOC statement stressed that all majalis (gatherings) and juloos (processions) must be held in accordance with the government-mandated coronavirus safety protocols.

This means that during majalis and juloos, all participants must ensure they wear a mask and maintain social distancing.

The organisers, for their part, must use thermal screening devices to check the temperatures of participants before permitting them entry. They must also guarantee the provision of hand sanitisers and masks to those without any.

The NCOC said that all gatherings must be held in large places that are well ventilated, adding that private gatherings at homes must be avoided.

According to the NCOC, the administration may use the services of Razakars for the enforcement of coronavirus safety protocols, if needed.

It mandated the display of all coronavirus safety precautions in clearly visible places throughout the majalis venues and juloos routes.

The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee on Monday sighted the Muharram-ul-Haram moon, which rang in the new Islamic year, 1443 AH.

Consequently, the first of Muharram begins today. The 9th of Muharram will be observed on Wednesday, August 18, and Youm-e-Ashura will be marked on August 19.

Pakistan reports 3,221 coronavirus cases in 24 hours

Pakistan has reported 95 deaths in the last 24 hours by novel coronavirus as the number of positive cases has surged to 1,105,300. The nationwide tally of fatalities has jumped to 24,573 on Tuesday.

According to the latest figures by the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) 3,221 persons tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 24 hours.

Punjab remains the worst-hit province in terms of deaths followed by Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Till now 11,412 individuals have lost their lives to the epidemic in Punjab 6,475 in Sindh, 4,679 in KP, 837 in Islamabad, 669 in Azad Kashmir, 335 in Balochistan, and 166 in GB.

Furthermore 413,379 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Sindh, 373,718 in Punjab, 153,134 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 94,402 in Islamabad, 31,632 in Balochistan, 29,593 in Azad Kashmir and 9,442 in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Pakistan has so far conducted 16,950,196 coronavirus tests and 48,181 in the last 24 hours 993,304 patients have recovered in the country whereas 4,896 patients are in critical condition.
