During a meeting in Ankara on Thursday, May 17, 2018, the Turkish undersecretary of Defense Industries İsmail Demir announced that the contract for the mass production of the indigenous Main Battle Tank (MBT) Altay will be inked soon.

In April 2018, it was announced that the Turkish Company BMC, a manufacturer of wheeled armoured and tactical vehicles, has won the contract to continue the development and production of the indigenous MBT Main Battle Tank dubbed Altay.

According to Turkish defense industry sources, the mass production of the Altay MBT could started in late 2019 or early 2020. Previously, in the 2017-2021 Strategic Plan published by the SSM (Undersecretariat for Defence Industries), the primary date for the first Altay Main Battle Tank entering service was set for 2020. According to the plan, the first 15 tanks will be put into service in 2020, while 20 tanks will be delivered in 2021.

The Turkish National Main Battle Tank Project began in 2005. In September 2010, the conceptual design phase of Altay was completed. The first prototype was presented in 2015.

Turkey could order a first batch of 250 MITÜP Altay MBTs but a total of 1,000 new tanks will be produced in four separate lots of 250 units.

The Altay MBT is the future third generation main battle tank (MBT) for the Turkish army. The first prototypes of Turkey’s main battle tank ALTAY designed and developed by OTOKAR, the biggest privately owned company of the Turkish Defence Industry was unveiled at OTOKAR facilities in Sakarya on November 15th, 2012.

The design of ALTAY has been realized in order to fulfill all kinds of operational requirements derived from the technical and tactical demands of the Turkish Armed Forces. In this scope, ALTAY has been equipped with the latest technologies that are used in the modern tanks. With its superior fire power and hit rate, high mobility and survivability features, it’s anticipated that ALTAY will be one of the fundamental and deterrent assets of the Turkish Armed Forces.

I hope BMC makes some changes regarding Altay's frontal design. According to me, Otokar's Altay AHT was a success.

Once equipped with Aselsan's Active Protection System, AKKOR, it will be an invincible MBT.

"AKKOR features an impressive reaction time of only 1/15th of a second, allowing it to effectively defend the host platform against rockets and missiles fired from a distance as close as 50 meters (164 feet).

What sets AKKOR apart from its competition is its smart interceptor. Most other hard-kill active protection systems detect an incoming threat, calculate its trajectory, find out when it will arrive at a certain point in space, and then fire a bunch of projectiles, typically steel balls (like a shotgun pellets), toward that general direction hoping that at least one of the steel balls will hit the threat and destroy it before it can make contact with the host platform. This technique, while simple and efficient, doesn’t protect against the newer generation, variable-velocity rockets and missiles that are designed to trick an active protection system into firing too early or too late, and consequently missing.

AKKOR, on the other hand, goes one step further. First, just like a legacy active protection system, it detects a threat, calculates its trajectory and aims towards a point in its path to intercept it — within a deviation allowance of less than 1 degree. Then, instead of firing a swarm of steel balls like its competition, AKKOR launches a single smart interceptor with its own on-board sensor, jointly developed by TUBITAK SAGE, and a high explosive warhead. Once activated, the interceptor continuously measures the distance between itself and the incoming threat during its short flight, detonates the high explosive warhead when it determines that it’s closest to the threat and effectively destroys it, all within the span of about one to two seconds. This method ensures the highest hit probability and effectiveness against both older and the newest generation anti-tank rockets and missiles."

AKKOR has advanced the field of active protection to a whole new level.

According to Yusuf Akbaba, three Arabic countries granted guarantee to order Altay MBT's once it enters serial production.

That sounds like the wet dreams some people had a while ago for the hundreds of billions of dollars Arabs were going to take away from the West and re-invest in Turkey. :D

Never going to happen.

Let's see, Qatar could be one of those.
