What's new

Congratulations Pakistan on gaining CERN membership

If it were about the 'money' then India and several other observer countries like them, with plenty in the kitty, would not have a pending status on their application. Pakistan has beaten many to it and on merit.

We paid with blood, sweat and tears to get here. A nation that wanted to get here even if it meant eating grass cannot be a pushover. I must pay homage to our nuclear scientists who created a nuclear industry when 60% of our population was still traveling by horse carts. Without the knowledge, expertise and industrial base they created for our westernization program we wouldn't have gotten here. I hope that Pakistan will remain a responsible nuclear power and a progressive partisan in global quest for nuclear science and theoretical/applied physics.

I appreciate your strenght in reminding the Pakistani people of the sordid past. I was in Pakistan first in the very early 80's as young buck, and was amazed at its progressive values, institutions and western democratic outlook. This was when Gen. Zia had not yet completed taking Pakistan hard right into an ideological state.

I don't know how old you are, but if you were around that time i.e. pre Zia's plan coming to fruition- you would have never guessed that one of South Asia's only progressive bastions and best economy, would turnout to be a country that subsequently disowned one of its national prides - Mr. Salam, in its future.

But I have full faith that one day you will be back. Your civilian government is still in its infancy stage, and I firmly believe that after a few more cycles of a democratic elected government being in place, you will be back to the old glory days.

Now, I say this as a friend of Pakistan, you have to find a solution with all your neighbours and I mean all, even the contentious ones, for you to get back to that place.

Our silly moves were dictated by our fear for our existence. We lost 1 million people to 1947 migration, lost half of our country and endured a Soviet dagger in our underbelly. We emerged strong, now we can defend ourselves and are confident. Youth literacy is over 70%, and the youth being over 75% of the population, that is a historic high. We have seen dark days, blood, sweat, tears, wars, floods, quakes, mass migrations and international isolation. The very fact that we are still here is no less than a homage to our inbuilt resilience. I take your advice with an open heart and with confidence that we the young kids of Pakistan will take back our country from Mullahs and run it as it best serves its people.

Not to rain on the parade, but CERN is desperate for money.
You pay, you're in.
I'm sure India would like to also become part, if it was about money.

Have you seen the thread which posts imaged of early Pakistan?

We had the Queen visit us and she'd stand in her car with no roof. There was Zia (or Ayub, can't remember) standing with her. Girls will walk around wearing skirts, they could smoke or drive. People could have a drink.

You should see that thread.

First congratz to Pakistan, now to dispel some myths in this thread:

Associate membership = 1/10th of price of full membership.

And ya, while it's true CERN needs money (LHC operating cost = 1.bill$/year, electricity in that ~30 mill.$, computing ~300mill.$, search for Higgs-Boson was 5.bill$), i doubt they took Brazil, Russia, Pakistan and Turkey (all associate members) on board just for the money. If i'm not mistaken Pakistan paid for it's scientists to be working at CERN with finished goods, used to construct the LHC itself.

However it is also true, that there's never enough money, and especially in these times when studies are being done on the feasibility of an accelerator three times as big as LHC.

Below is list of Pakistan's contributions, i would expect similar arrangements being made if the bigger collider gets a green light.

It really is a great news. And one does not become associate member of CERN for no reason. For those who dont know, CERN is leading facility on particle physics and employs one of the largest group of top physics scientists. Located on the border of Switzerland and France, its particle collider runs through both countries. CERN scientists create conditions in the collider which existed almost at the time of Universe creation (Big Bang). Sub Atomic particles of matter, anti-matter, and energy are regularly played with there. Particle physics is at the cutting edge of Science right now and this is where these guys are trying to unlock mysteries of Universe. Largest number of physics noble laureates work here. Pakistan's Noble laureate Dr Abdussalm worked in same field. His work which proved unification of Weak Nuclear Force with Electro-magnetic force (There are only 4 forces at work in Universe I.e. Gravity, Electromagnetic, Weak Nuclear Force ane Strong Nuclear Force. Science belives there existed only one force at the time of Big Bang and these forces branched out as energy reduced due to expansion of Universe. To prove it they need to create conditions which existed immediately after Big Bang. These conditions are created in particle colliders of which CERN is largest and most advanced. CERN also leads the research in finding 'Higgs Boson' also called Gods Particle, which can unlock mystry of creation of Universe.)

CERN is not owned by any state and several countries have their scientist working including Pakistan. Pakistan infact has a very long relationship with CERN. It is quite a presitigious and interesting work going on there. It indeed is an honour to be part of CERN and seems befitting for Pakistan as work of Dr Abdussalm was put to practicAl test and found to be correct. They did find the particle (I forgot the name) which he predicted in his theory thus proving unification of these forces and leading research to unification of strong nuclear force (they haven't succeded yet in uniting all of them yet). Energy required to combine these forces is enormous and some scientists actually expressed fear that world could come to an end when they experimented last year (or maybe a year before) to create the 'God's particle'.

I stumbled on this many years back it really is very amazing science. I have forgotton a lot but still it is no small feat. Congrats to Pakistan!

I just read across the wires that Pakistan is now a full member of CERN. While it seems that all we read about Pakistan is negative. Which is contrary to the country I visited in an official capacity several times. I have to say - To have one the best experiences in mingling with warm, welcoming people, offering the best hospitality extended to foreign guests, please visit Pakistan.

:pakistan:

We should celebrate Pakistan's entry into CERN as a full member. One that will have positive implications to their economy .

Congrat to our brother.
Thank you

I believe and please feel free to correct me, that an Associate member is a full member. They have 'Observer' members and Associate members.

No, Associate Membership is a pre-stage to Membership

Congratulations. But do you even know what priorities lead some countries to want to become a member? Meaning, what is the most substantial thing that you think Pakistan will get out of it?

Pakistan gets to contribute to scientific research in this field and this is what we get from it; the honor and prestige. I have read and sometimes communicated with CERN long ago. Notion of getting expertise from them for developing a super weapon is an insult to this institution and scientists therein. Making a bomb from their research is not what CERN is for. These guys have their sights on much higher goals and I am glad that Pakistan gets to contribute in that. We have worked there for very long time and they understand us.

P.S. We already know how to build weapons for our defense. Our expertise in this field is one of the reason we are accepted there.

Congratulations Pakistan. In dark times like these, every bit of good news counts.

It really is about priorities. If you look carefully, USA and China are not members either. We have our own programs which we are hoping to take further. If India really did want to become an associate member, I don't see why anyone should stop us. Especially since, we already have the talent pool and capability.

While Pakistan is piggybacking on the CERN. India is already in the process of constructing its OWN Hadron Collider. :P

India is set for the next big act in physics after the CERN experiment
