Confirmed: Iran and Russia to Co-Produce Su-30 Fighter Jet

The point I was trying to make is that PAKFA is an evolutionary design built over Su-30 design. It is unlike the F-22 and F-35 which are revolutionary designs which have nothing to do with F-15 and FA-18. So any experience Iran gains with Su-30 can be used in future towards PAKFA as well. How far that future might be, is not that important right now. But hopefully it won't be that far. Even India has serious plans for adopting and integrating PAKFA technology. Iran should too. Su-30 is just a step in the right direction.
You are not right. PAK FA was created for a different aerodynamic configuration. This is largely achievements Mig-31 and Su-37. Su-35S is a simplified front-looking radar from the PAKFA, but this similarity ends airplanes :)

.
though i'm personally a fan of the mig-25 foxbat family and its upgraded brothers , i know they are outdated but the altitude and speed they fly , they can kick serious butzz in the air , or they can be used for reconaissance like they used to

.
Why not the Su-35?

If Iran does choose a Su-30, it will be the MKI of course, but much newer in tech.

It won't matter much. As long as it is a ToT, Su-30m2 or MKI is good enough for Iran. No need to go uber if money can be saved and technology acquired. Both 30 and 35 are a single platform with different system organization. Beside in future even Su-35 will be replaced by PAKFA so this technology acquisition will move towards PAKFA and not 35. As India also is taking the same route.

Iran always Surprise me with their Policy and Decisions.
its so sad to see the crack in wall of Pak-Iran relationship in last few years ..

Differences between big countries are normal affair. Nothing serious! Things are now moving in the right direction.

No, it's not. The PAK FA is an entirely new design. It is completely revolutionary.

What makes you think it is even close to a Su-27/30? The fuselage is different, the canopy is different, the wings are different, the tail is different, the inlets are different. There's nothing similar. Just look at the sheer size of the fuselage compared to the wing. Not to mention the profile of the aircraft.

As a matter of fact, the design is far more revolutionary than the F-22. Even Boeing's new F/A-XX concept is much closer to the PAK FA.

I don't want to go off topic anymore.

I don't mind if Iran buys PAK FA in the future. More money for India. And of course, I'm more than happy if Iran chooses Su-30MKI, we also make parts for them and future spares and support will be done in India, possibly.

But I think that if money isn't a problem, Iran can aim for a Su-35 production line. It has a newer airframe and a more advanced engine. It will be of more benefit to the Iranian aerospace industry.

You mean I have to take your lay opinion more seriously than the opinion of an expert who publishes under his own name rather than under a handle in a defense forum?

Assessing the Sukhoi PAK-FA / Sukhoi/KnAAPO T-50/I-21/Article701 PAK-FA Перспективный Авиационный Комплекс Фронтовой Авиации

We read:

"In the broadest of terms, the PAK-FA is a fusion of ideas and design features seen in late model Flanker variants and demonstrators, but incorporating specific stealth shaping features employed previously in the Northrop/MDC YF-23 ATF demonstrator, and the production LM F-22 Raptor. The PAK-FA is clearly a unique Russian design and is neither a copy of the F-22 or the YF-23.

No less importantly, the PAK-FA is by Western standards a low risk design, following the Russian philosophy of “evolutionary” design, rather than the “Big Bang” approach currently favoured in the West, of trying to start from scratch with most or every key portion of the design.

It is important to note that the Russian approach to development more than often differs from the Western approach, particularly that of the United States industry, with a much stronger Russian focus on risk management and risk minimization. A powerful approach evident in the development of the Flanker family of aircraft has been, firstly, to plan long term, then to spread developmental risks across the series of planned new aircraft types and variants as well as parallel design/development activities. The benefits of such an approach are clearly obvious.

The best illustration of how much more effective Russian systems development philosophy is, is that the development of the PAK-FA, with a projected budget in the order of US$10 Billion, was launched officially in 2002, concurrently with the launch of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program, yet the latter has experienced repeated delays in schedule, repeated problems with basic technology, and remains heavily laden with accumulated design risks as well as inordinately high and growing costs."

Enough said.

More money for India?! Dude the plane is Russian. If Russia did not want to sell it to Iran, then India could not sell anything to Iran. The technology is Russian. Though with more countries building it and buying it, the total cost per plane will go down benefiting all. But Iran is interested in technology acquisition. As India is doing itself by acquiring technology from Russia in this regard (among others).

It is just the start of a long road to modernization of Iranian AF. With time, all these will be done too. India had a head start in this game.

Iran is catching up.

Confirmed: Iran and Russia to Co-Produce Su-30 Fighter Jet | The Diplomat

During a recent television interview, Iran’s Defense Minister, General Hossein Dehqhan, announced that Iran will sign a contract with Russia for the co-production of an undisclosed number of Russian-made Sukhoi Su-30 multirole fighter aircraft, Fars News Agency reports.

Should the deal go through, Iran will be the second country in the world after India to produce a variation of the Su-30 fighter jet locally. However, as of now, it still remains unclear in what capacity Tehran will be involved in the aircraft production process.

According to a source within Iran’s Defense Ministry interviewed by Sputnik News, a contract could be signed as early as February 16, when the Iranian defense minister will arrive in Moscow to discuss the deliveries of S-300 air defense systems and the Sukhoi Su-30 aircraft.

“Minister Dehgan is taking a number of the Defense Ministry’s representatives to the Russian capital to meet with their Russian colleagues and other highly-ranked officials,” the source notes.

“The last stages will be discussed of delivering Iran the S-300 complex, the first part of which should arrive before the end of next month, and the second by the end of June. Minister Dehqwan will also discuss the delivery of Su-30 airplanes because the Defense Ministry believes the Iranian Air Force needs this type of plane. We’ve moved far in these discussions of purchases and I think that during the upcoming visit a contract will be signed,” according to the source.

First rumors about a likely Iranian-Russian Su-30 deal emerged already in the summer of 2015 during the MAKS airshow, held near Moscow. “We are discussing the purchase of Sukhoi fighter planes,” Dehqhan told Iran’s Press TV back then.

However, Iran’s Vice-President for Science and Technology Affairs, Sorena Sattari, who was also present during the discussions, downplayed the talks at the time: “We spoke about it but we didn’t discuss purchasing them and talks were mostly focused on the technological issues.”

As I explained previously (See: “Will Iran License-Build Russia’s T-90S Main Battle Tank?”):

Under the so-called Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCOP), an international agreement on the nuclear program of Iran signed in July 2015, the UN arms embargo will be lifted 5 years after the JCOP adoption day. However, conventional weapons sales can be decided on a case-by-case basis meanwhile. “During the five years arms deliveries to Iran would be possible if they clear a notification and verification process in the UN Security Council,” according to Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov.

It is unclear what variant of the Sukhoi Su-30 Iran is interested in, nor how many aircraft it wants to procure and within what timeframe. During his recent television interview, General Hossein Dehqhan, also rejected the idea of procuring Chengdu J-10 lightweight multirole fighter aircraft from China.

And I lived long enough to see this day! This is great!

Nothing more expected from you. Bringing in a 1960's technology. A plane that used to get shot down by Iranian AF nonetheless, during Iran-Iraq war and one even getting shot down by a F-5.

And then you compare it with Su-30 design. So much so for your knowledge in the matter.

Factory production Su-35S blocked orders slightly less than the "Irkut" Su-30cm / MKI. However, the complexity of production Su-35S above. Price +High load plant + overall complexity of the Su-35S. Iran will not be able in any way to localize the production. these factors are likely to have served as a reason for the choice of a simple Su-30cm, especially his version of MCI in small quantities produced in India, and it is possible to unload the plant in Russia.
Russia this year to build 100 aircraft. Before putting a new plant in KnAAZ I do not think it possible production increase in the number of combat aircraft.

Congratulation Iran and a big congrats to @Daneshmand :
I know my Good sir you had advocated a make in Iran concept and i hope like India's MKIs you can have MKIr.. A wonderful bird, it will serve your country's need..

Pls do ensure that your local MIC and aero industry grows with sufficient localisation and tech absorption wherever possible..You should not miss the chance at all.. Of course do also look at spares and service part perhaps a feedback from our IAF and GOI so that we can help you with everything including training pilots..

This will open up the doors in future for more jets like 5th Gen PAKFA say a decade later from now but more importantly Iran may be able to have a jet fighter program on its own say a 5th gen program if sufficiently the MIC evolves..

It opens up to endless possibilities and sky is the limit.. Congrats again...

Hope to see MKI and MKIr together soon in a bilateral exercise...
