Well, you could say that. The terrain over the northern frontiers isn't really tank friendly and generally unsuitable for large scale manoeuvres.

PS - And what was the purpose of this thread again??

Terrain on Ladakh plateau is highly favourable for Tank battles. It is getting tank to Ladakh Plateau that is problem. We do not have capability to maintain tanks on field in Ladakh, and getting them back to base for repairs is a huge pain.

Actually Arjuns ,if we could get them there and maintain them satisfactorily, would be much more useful than T-series tanks (As the weight related shortcoming of Arjun is negated due to absence of bridges and marshes in this area.

How t72 transported to ladakh then?c17 is capable of living one tank at a time.
Well I guess all the Arjuns are deployed along Pakistan border therefore transportation of Arjuns would be difficult. It's not impossible since transport Arjuns as C17's have transported M1's halfway across the globe.

I think bulk of them would have been transported by Tank transports via NH 1 (passing through Zojila) and probably driven to their base from Leh. Using C17 would be prohibitively expensive and they would probably be used only in emergency.

True, it will be ridiculous to think of tank battles in such terrain with now where to run or hide but some kids want to compare disneyland with junglebook.

Actually Ladakh terrain ,a rocky flatland with clear line of sight in all directions, is one of the best terrain for using Tanks. There may be high mountains ringfencing Ladakh plateau (and some inside the plateau itself as it is not a true plateau), but it by itself is 87000 Sq Km, enough for large scale maneuver of Tanks.

It is logistics that are problem in this kind of area.

Has the heavy lift capability of C-17's ever used in India for transporting tanks to desolate locagion?

I don't think that they have been used on large scale transport, except for some proof of concept.

I wasn't talking about the entire Ladakh plateau but the part which lies immediately adjacent to the LAC!!That part is predominantly mountainous as it lies close to the Karakorum ranges.Good thing is the heights are in our hands, and from those vantage points, ATGMs can be used against any advancing enemy armored forces with devastating effect.

And yeah, Arjuns would have been better but their numbers are just too limited, for now.

What kind of stupid thread is this.

No one has the raw performance data regarding the newer gen armour both countries use on their tanks.
