European Commission has urged EU member states to take action to accelerate Turkey's membership negotiations
European Commission has urged EU member states to take action to accelerate Turkey's membership negotiations following statements from Germany and France that a new policy area could be opened in talks with Ankara soon.
Peter Stano, spokesperson for EU Commissioner for enlargement Stefan Fuele, said in a daily press briefing on Monday that the commissioner had welcomed France's proposal to open the policy chapter on "Regional Policy and Coordination of Structural Instruments" and German Chancellor Angela Merkel's "positive remarks" over the issue.
Stano said EU members had pledged as recently as last December for "active and decent accession negotiations with Turkey," calling on EU countries to live up to their promises.
"Member countries themselves wanted a fresh momentum in the accession negotiations and we believe that momentum will be attained," Stano said.
