The Bell AH-1 Cobra is a gunship currently in active service, being operated by Pakistan, the US, South Korea, Japan, Jordan, Turkey, Bahrain, Thailand, Kenya and the Philippines. Spain and Israel are also former operators of the helicopter. It has most notably seen combat in Vietnam, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Somalia, Grenada, Haiti and Panama, displaying a ruthless efficiency at destroying targets. In Vietnam alone, the chopper racked up over 1 million hours of usage in various combat operations.

This nightmare is the last thing many Reds ever saw

There are 48 of these sky-demons currently in Pakistani service, being armed to the teeth with Baktar Shikan anti tank missiles, which have a 90% kill probability and have managed to successfully take out many T-72s in Bosnia and Syria (the T-72 makes up roughly half of India's tank inventory). These helicopters were used by the Pakistani army most notably during it's operations in Somalia, as part of the UN peace-keeping force.

Here are some videos documenting Cobra combat usage:

The fact we have not engineered a similar craft is beyond my understanding with Engineering Resources at PAKISTAN's disposal

It's somewhat disappointing to talk about this Gunship

Even Iran has made a copy of this called the Toufan without any support from the US, why Pakistan did not is beyond me. I think maybe we were under the delusions that we will keep getting them from the US.

Iran Illegally Copied the design against the Terms of Sales. And Iran did that because they were under sanctions and Defense industry would have collaborated with them due to sanctions. Pakistan cannot do that legally. If we wanted to design our own gunship it would have been in the form of a joint venture with another Aviation industry just like Turkish T129 is based of Italian Agusta A129 Mangusta. But Venturing with Western partners was always beyond our means, while we are still not satisfied with the performance of the Chinese Gunships, And Russia was out of reach.

Pakistan realised the importance of Gunship very late.

T-72 armor from Serbia and Bosnia are old and don't factor in ERA. Newer ERA can make heat warheads half as effective even with Tandem-Warheads. I seriously doubt the HJ-8 can reliably take out T-72s or T-90s as a matter of fact.

. .
They've done the same in Syria too, not just Yugoslavia.
Different armor as I stated before, read before you answer. Newer ERA greatly decreases armor penetration even with Tandem warheads. Aging Syrian armor with inexperienced operators amounts to an easy kill.

Introduced on the T-80U tank in 1985, Kontakt-5 is made up of "bricks" of explosive sandwiched between two metal plates. The plates are arranged in such a way as to move sideways rapidly when the explosive detonates. This will force an incoming kinetic energy penetrator or shaped charge (hint-hint HJ-8)jet to cut through more armour than the thickness of the plating itself, since "new" plating is constantly fed into the penetrating body. A kinetic energy penetrator will also be subjected to powerful sideways forces, which might be large enough to cut the rod into two or more pieces. This will significantly reduce the penetrating capabilities of the penetrator, since the penetrating force will be dissipated over a larger volume of armour.

T-72 Ajeya ERA

The ERA developed by DRDO is a sandwich of explosive and metal plates. The panels of ERA are assembled in metallic containers. When the jet of a shaped charge warhead hits ERA panel, explosive in it detonates. As a result, the plates are accelerated and start moving outward in normal direction. The moving plates and the detonaters render the jet ineffective which loses its penetration capability

Itni Tofeeq aur Pesey hotey to pehley Assault Rifle to apni bana letey :)
Anyways to make a modern effective Gunship it requires a massive industrial base. Engine Manufacturing, Microchip manufacturing, Metallurgy, Advance Sensors, Electronics, Military grade Software Development(JF17 software was written by Chinese and in C instead of the military standard ADA) etc etc.
We don't have the infrastructure for that. Hopefully the Aviation city project under project AZM will kick start a lot of these for us in future.
Irani Weapons are always dubious i would not consider it as an example. Not questioning Talent of Irani Engineers but They always come up with an advance weapon system claim without having any previous expertise or industrial base for it.
I mean claiming to develop a 5th generation fighter without a foreign partner with no Fabrication manufacturing facility in the country? 80s era Motorola knockoff microchips wont do any good for modern systems. Even Russia Struggles in Fab modernization. Anyways my point conveyed. Indeginous developement of modern weapons systems requires MASSIVE Investments in multitudes of industrial sectors ranging from engineering, metallurgy, software, electronics. Weapon systems cannot be developed in isolation. Partnership and joint ventures with an experienced partner is the best way forward. Stories of JF17 and LCA are a clear example

R & D needs a lot of money.
Secondly, we pay attention when we suffer.
