Raheel-Sharif.jpg

I find it ironic that the same people praising him for his many accomplishments, are now attacking General Raheel Sharif for doing nothing for the country. Perhaps it is because many of these people naively expected him to arrest corrupt politicians, or commit a coup; Maybe they expected him to stop terrorism altogether.

We have seen such things in the past, with previous COAS', just before their retirement. There were many people on this very forum, calling for rt.Gen. Keyani's promotion to 5 star general, before his retirement. Now, he's blamed for every little incident of terrorism in the country, by those same people. Many calling him incompetent, or a failure, not realizing that he (and currently Gen Sharif) did their best with the circumstances presented.

Now, with Pakistan's current COAS' announcement of not taking an extension, he's being attacked for not being serious about terrorism, or corruption in the country; forgetting that COAS has authorised corruption cases against former and current military officers, and launched Pakistan's biggest and most successful offensive to date, against terrorist targets. The same people who attack him, seem to forget that he's a military leader, not the head of state. He has no authority to arrest politicians, without the express permission of the parliament, courts, or through justification of use of NAP and terror laws (which he has no material justification to use).

With the circumstances presented, General Sharif has done a splendid job, dropping terrorism incidents down by around 50% nationally, increasing Pakistan's perception globally, and launching massive military operations in NWA and authorizing action in Karachi. As far as I'm concerned, all he needed to do is lay the foundation for Pakistan's terrorism-free future, and he has done just that. To me, he has more than deserved his retirement from the military, and I truly hope he gets into politics as a civilian. It is up to the future COAS to finish the job, and I am sure that he too will face unjust vicious attacks as well.

Make no mistake, Gen Sharif is a hero. The criticisms, and vicious attacks that he has faced by the very people who praised him just a few weeks prior to his retirement announcement, are unjust and folly. He did his best, and the mistakes he made, no one could have seen them coming. Remember, hindsight is 20/20, and it takes a particularly naive person to suggest otherwise.

Sir,

He is going to be smashed harder than Gen. Kiyani----you know why----because Gen Kiyani was already a weak su-ck---a worthless general---. People did not attach their hopes with him

Gen Raheel on the hand was a man of action---and when he did not perform to his maximum capabilities people are going to take him to task and rightfully so. People had hung their hopes on him---and when he failed them---they will castrate him.

Thanks for replying.

Your views are exactly the type that I'm taking about. People's expectations and ground reality are so far apart, it's a wonder that Pakistan is hasn't been absorbed by India.

Keyani was around when the army was deeply unpopular, and was trying to rebuild the army's image. That included no interfering with internal politics, and depoliticizing the army to a certain extent. The criticisms he faces are unjustifiable.

General Raheel Sharif has done what must be done. The people's hopes of a terrorism free Pakistan should never have been with him, rather it should have been with the army. He has NOT failed anyone, and I challenge anyone to prove me otherwise. He has done better than most people gave him credit for. People expected him to be a failure, considering that he was the man that NS personally picked, ignoring more senior officers that were expected to be picked.

General Raheef Sharif has succeeded in every way.

At least that's my opinion.

Given the conditions, the General has done a lot of good things, and off course he has his share of failures. Better to judge a person based on both pros and cons - and, the general definitely has a higher balance on his pros side. InshaAllah the next chief will show even better performance since this is now an institutional matter. The most important part is how as an institution Pak army is faring....

.
This is a Pakistan's internal matter but my observation as an outside person has been that every general in Pakistan has always been praised when in power and has been condemned once they were out of power.

Not sure what is the reason though..

Gen. K was a spreadsheet general, this was how some senior Maj/Col level officers referred to him who retired same time as him and were stationed in Pindi at the time. RS is in a completely different league to Gen. Kiyani, he will forever be remembered by those with working braincells as the man in the GHQ who rode crisis after crisis in professional and steadfast manner.

In the end, he did not allow personal opinion to sully the sanctity of his office! my two cents!

During Gen.Kiyani's tenure, for most of the time; the conditions were not suitable for such an Op to be carried out due to non backing of political, religious parties, crippling economy, bad relations with US and also he had to deal with likes of Zardari & Rehman Malik as well. Also most importantly there was no public consensus on WOT as we are seeing it today. At least Gen.Kiyani deserves the credit for ensuring the political setup to take its roots and passed the favorable environment to the next civilian and military leaderships to take bold decisions

I am pretty sure even if RS had accepted an extension he would have been condemned after his extension period is done. This happed with Musharraf, Karamat, Zia, Kiyani etc.

He has done an excellent job imo don't know why we ppl first make gods out of our COAS's and then we bash them for literally every thing i think ppl expected just too much from him but still he did what was possible by him. But i do hope actually it's my wish that someday he would join politics and maybe one day who knows he will be our future PM just imagine that :)

peole say that we have so much patriot pushtoon despite after "pakhtonistan" movements (by AFG & ANP etc), and this war on terror bcz Ayub Khan gave special attention for Pashtoon recruitment in Armed forces (& in other sectors as he was president too)
Kiyani biggest contribution is relaxing rules for young Baloch recruitment (my opinion)
their number has grown to some 30000. Now if you take 7 person family then this number is 210000. Considering "family" close relatives like Uncle, aunt, masi, friends etc etc this number is so huge.. so now Pak government has its 30000 ambassadors/representatives in Balochistan and those have straight "direct" access into the hearts of baloch community.. they will be the opinion makers of Gov view and it will reap manifold...

The relevant word being "man", as in he isn't "God" or a "miracle worker".

Like it or not, Pakistan is a diverse country with diverse and competing interest groups. When the people of Sindh themselves cannot find it in them to vote out the walking disaster that is the PPP, expecting Kiyani, Raheel or any one individual to do so is at best wishful thinking.

There was a time when the kind of 'whole scale cleansing of the system by any means necessary' that you desire and call for might have worked - that time was prior to the collapse of the Soviet Union. The information and media revolution and the end of the Cold War closed that particular window of opportunity.
