What's new

CM Punjab posing for picture while supervising water drainage !

There are drains, but they are overwhelmed by the large amounts of garbage and the low amounts of maintenance. And this state of affairs is true no matter who is in power.
Even if there is garbage blocking...why arent there cleaners cleaning? The taxes in Pakistan is increasing every year but no services are provided and also no checking on whose claiming the taxes and where they are going....

2ndly, you keep pointing to those who are littering but you failed to point to those who refused to educate them....What is the use of being educated when you cant afford basic common knowledge for the needy? If that is not the work of the blasted gov. then what is their job? To carry on building as if there is no tomorrow? To keep rebuilding the same road every 6mths?

And lastly, as far as I am concerned the main roads have cleaners cleaning them....on top of that they have bloody assholes who are not educating the public...Ab sara kaam public keray then why have huge salaries for all these blasted minister who on top of that get free homes and servants and cars for sitting in a/c offices??

Just asking where do you draw the line? When does the puppets called the govt come in?

If Lahore turned this, I would love it haha

Yaar been there just last yr I think...not as spectacular as the pix show....Plus they have houses with stilts while Lahore houses are not on stilts...

The real problem starts with the people themselves, and is then compounded by poor maintenance as part of poor governance.
Well if the govt does something about the drainage then only can you start blaming people for clogging an unseen accidentally broken hole (which they forgot to fix) they call drainage....

.
It is a combination of many factors that leads to such situations.

Do people want to pay for these services or not?

It is not just the government's job. People themselves are also responsible for paying attention to their civic duties.

we can charge every household a municipal tax that must be collected by law.

this can be done. Education programs for civic living to be made mandatory in schools like healthy living being taught in schools in the US

Keep clean and recycle should be the motto.

You are touching on a lot of issues that have led to the present situation. Persistent failures of governance and social development have their roots in the decades past, not just the present government, and include lack of education, lack of civic sense, no rule of law and corruption.

This flooding is only one manifestation of all these failures, that is all.

Such words mean nothing without actually practicing them. That is the story of Pakistan and its mottos. Remember "Unity, Faith, Discipline" and look outside.

lack of maintenance by the municipal government in Lahore. Therefore the government is responsible.

They are responsible for garbage collection. They are responsible for heeding the people who voted them in and keeping the drains open.

The people must also pay attention to their own civic duties if they want their local government to be able to do their jobs too.

you seem to have a great angst against the people of Pakistan.

I know of many émigrés from Pakistan who have this attitude of lamenting the state, blaming it on the Pakistani people's own character, calling It endemically abhorrent, and in that process some became anti-Pakistani. They generalize over the whole country whenever a local issue arises.

There is no angst in what I have said, because it applies equally to all countries. Local governments can do their jobs only if the people that they serve also do their individual civic duties properly. That holds true for any country.

It takes both people not to throw trash everywhere and a civic body to maintain the drains. Having only one or the other or neither does not work.

Pakistanis are good people and they listen and do change if someone guides them. May be they should now vote for someone else. The continuous string of repetitive and negative posts from your side against "Pakistanis" have given me this message

Pakistanis are a bunch like white trash, irresponsible not worthy of helping because they cannot help themselves

looking at that, all I can say is billions of rupees worth of damage

The majority of people in any given society are probably teachably good and just need a proper system to work within, that is all. This is exactly why I always champion the rule of law, which is the basic ingredient lacking in Pakistan. This crucial omission leads even good people to not care about what they do, since they see no value in it.

We can discuss this further elsewhere if you want. Let us keep to the topic here, please.

then trying disposable bags?

Old style paper bags that pulp easily when wet work best and are quite inexpensive to use too. Using non-disposable alternatives to Styrofoam cups and plates and plastic cutlery are also important.

Fair enough...it is manifest of say 7 yrs of a CM who did not 1 change...so its not even decades of past or present govt..but 1 CM!

They say it takes 1 man to make a change...I see why people are soo against change...coz they have stuck to 1 man ....SS!

He could have done alot in 7yrs and it would have manifested in days off need eg. monsoon rain!

Perhaps banning plastic bags and concentrating on proper trash collection would be a better idea before trying for recycling.
or charging the people for the plastic bags so they know its worth!

Well, you may not see SS as a political success, but may be other people in Lahore and Punjab do?

Yes i agree and what you mention is certainly true. Rule of law is indeed the basic ingredient lacking in Pakistan and i too have always championed that on PDF. However, rule of law is the government's responsibility. What you are saying is that the government is responsible for this disaster due to lack of rule of law.
