Srinagar, Chandigarh, Amritsar Airports Shut After IAF Jet Crash

Flightradar24, a global flight tracking service added that international flights that transit between Indian and Pakistani airspace were also being affected, and that many flights had now turned back or were looking for alternative routes.

Srinagar, Jammu and Leh airports were closed for civilian air traffic shortly after an IAF jet crashed in Budgam district and amid escalation of cross-Line of Control shelling between armies of India and Pakistan, PTI said.

Diverting civilian aviation to clean up the airspace tends to be a precursor to assigning air defense kill boxes and preparing for war operations. I really hope that calmer minds prevail and the escalation stops soon. A war between the two countries would be devastating.

The international community needs to get involved so further escalation does not take place, but India has turned the issue into a "bilateral issue" between India and Pakistan. Any time a UN official or another nation offers mediation it has a fit and insists nobody else get involved.

Too much is at stake for the UN and other nations to remain silent. Sooner or later normalcy will have to return but in order to do that New Delhi needs to be convinced to accept foreign attempts at calming the situation down. Lets see what happens.
