Purposes and Principles of SCO

According to the SCO Charterand theDeclaration on the Establishment of the SCO, the main purposes of SCO are: strengthening mutual trust and good-neighborliness and friendship among member states;developing their effective cooperation in political affairs, the economy and trade, science and technology, culture, education, energy, transportation, environmental protection and other fields; working together to maintain regional peace, security and stability; and promoting the creation of a new international political and economic order featuring democracy, justice and rationality.

The SCO abides by the following basic principles: adherence to the purposes and principles of theCharter of the United Nations; respect for each other's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-interference in each other's internal affairs, mutual non-use or threat of use of force; equality among all member states; settlement of all questions through consultations; non-alignment and no directing against any other country or organization; opening to the outside world and willingness to carry out all forms of dialogues, exchanges and cooperation with other countries and relevant international or regional organizations.

The SCO stands for and acts on a new security concept anchored on mutual trust, disarmament and cooperative security; a new state-to-state relationship with partnership instead of alignment at its core, and a new model of regional cooperation featuring concerted efforts of countries of all sizes and mutually beneficial cooperation. In the course of development, aShanghaispirit gradually took shape, a spirit characterized by mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, cooperation, respect for diversified civilizations and common development.

If SCO is about respect for each other's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-interference in each other's internal affairs, mutual non-use or threat of use of force. India should join immediately.

Just my 2 paisa.

Good point, I get what you're hinting at. China will not be able to conduct aggressive patrolling and intrude in Indian territory or India will bring it up in SCO. But frankly, I'm not sure how much China respects things like these.

^ Interesting to note in that article, nobody is quoted.

India needs to set up some kind of Journalistic standards committee.

Not everything can be quoted. It could be personal opinion of the editor.

the question is really if you were forced into a corner where you had to make a choice what would you do...?

i know the standard response is india wants to be in both but i am interested in the cost/benefit anaylsis india considers vis a vis sco vs nato.

The Answer would be SCO if its NATO VS SCO

Reasons being its regional, represents more than half of world population, India being an old, long and trusted partner of Russia.
So in case of asking whom the loyalty lies the answer is Russia.

I second to you!!

I third to you.

India closer to SCO membership

Posted: Sat Jun 12 2010,

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on Friday opened the doors for India’s entry into the regional grouping, as it lifted the moratorium on new membership. The SCO, which comprises of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, changed the rules 10 years after its inception.

This happened at the SCO summit in the Uzbekistan Capital, which was attended by External Affairs Minister S M Krishna. However, the criteria for new members were not made public. Pakistan and Iran, both SCO observers, are also keen to join the grouping, although there is no clarity on the rules pertaining to UN sanctions which may bar Iran from joining the group.

India, which has been an observer of the SCO since 2005, has always been keen in SCO’s regional anti-terror mechanism and the contact group on Afghanistan.

New Delhi, even as an observer, has been sending Cabinet rank ministers for taking part in the SCO meeting. However, last year, it decided to elevate the level of engagement as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh attended the summit in Ekaterinberg in Russia.
