Chinese scholars warn of growing national arrogance

That isn't how it works in practice. On the other hand, I have seen Chinese researchers in action. They formed a sub-group out of the team, learning what they could from others yet refusing to share what they developed themselves. One member of this group was responsible for computer access and wanted all sorts of favors just to log on the system. Definitely an attempt at creating an intellectual monopoly, all because they didn't feel secure at sharing anything with anybody. It was worse than any patent or copyright protection could have been. (Unsurprisingly, the project failed.)

Of course his action is selfish and un-scholar like, but then you want to create a law to protect those kind of actions. In the real world, the incentive IP protection gives is mostly to the companies that hold those patents, the benefits for those who invent them are really small. Also imagine the lives could've been saved in Africa if it is not because of the IP issues on medicines.

Also imagine a world where every knowledge is to be IP protected, and what kind level of education will you get without paying you butt off for the royalties.

large companies can also violate patents with near impunity as they have the lawyers avaliable to crush any single inventor like a bug, or they can just do something like add a methyl group to a drug molecule and patent it themselves.

BBC News - China scholars warn of growing national arrogance

I agree with this article 100%.

The economic success in our country is causing a dangerous surge in nationalist feelings.

We should remember what Deng Xiaoping said: "Keep a cool head and maintain a low profile."

What happened to our traditional values of modesty and humility? We need to ensure that the nationalist sentiment in China does not grow too large, for the sake of regional stability and our economic growth.

What are your opinions?

Chinese-Dragon, from personal point of view, I don't think so. Most chinese poeple i met in real life (mainly chinese students in singapore) are proud of their nation but are not arrogant or overly nationalistic. They know how to respect others and other nations.

Its only few pricks online who bring about a negative image. they belittle others or make a lot of false or arrogant claims. but that happens with people of all nationality. there is no shortage of hate-spewing fanboys of any nationality, especially in defence forums. lets not judge any nation based on those low-life retards.

Every nation has its share of those overzealous ones. Because of their attention seeking nature, they are normally the loudest ones in the place like internet forums. In my opinion most Chinese people I know are deep down very nationalistic, however they are normally very rational and cool headed unless they are provoked.

On the contrary there should be some amount of arrogance and pride for ur country.

Germany or post war Japan didn come to the level that they r today without some pride.

Germans and Japanese people are always proud people, this was also one of the reason that led them to WW II, but of course they have proven themselves that theyt should be proud after what they have achieved.

I live in China,I know its weakness-dirty environment&unsmart people.
Of course without foreign investment,Chinese could do nothing.
They have little contribution but only use all achievements western people made.
But our civilization are quite different from that via western.

There is too little nationalism, not too much. This is a nonexistent problem, what are we paying them for? Why should these so called scholars care and what are they going to do about it, institute mind control?

Too often, so called humility is a euphamism for self-hatred and treason.

Spoken like a true extremist..........

Just feeling no smoking.
Many Chinese people like smoking but I don't.

Actually most of the publicity involving China has been created outside China. Still it never hurt to remind people not to be too arrogant or stuck up because image still matters.

Perhaps that is becuase the CCP controls the media in China? The only way Chinese intellectuals can speak out is through the foreign press. Even then if they still live in China, they risk being sent to a re-education camp.
