Let me just say you know nothing about Indian civilization and its continuity. It has been a continuous civilization for thousands of years. We have traditions and languages and literature and faith going so far back, you won't even know.

Realistically? More like 30. Then add another 10 for training, proficiency, and the institutionalization of those memories. Not counting actual combat experience. Look at it this way...Take the standard 4-yr enlistment for a US Army infantryman, the first year will include Basic Training and basically how to be an infantryman/rifleman. The last three years will be for refinement of those skills. If he chose not to reenlist, the Army will have at best 2 years of institutional memory from this person. But if he chose to reenlist for another 4 yrs, the Army will have 6 yrs of soldiering skills, experience, and perhaps even combat experience to pass on to the next generation. This is why the 10-yr mark is so important for any military. So for the PLA, the best way to defeat the US Army is through sheer overwhelming manpower, not through technology and anything else. For the highly technology dependent air and naval forces...fugetaboutit...The PLAN will sunk and the PLAAF will be grounded.

Keep deluding yourself please. We'll see in combat which is more technologically advanced -- J-20 or F-22!

Considering the fact that the mainstay of Chinese airforce was composed of Mig-21 variants until mid 1990's, I'd say the gap is closing pretty quickly. 40 year gap you say? Why not 60?

Because that would be absurd. The 20-yr gap is an optimistic speculation. Was it based upon technology only? Or how about currently deployed technology? What about technologies that are on the cusp between development and deployment? The USAF's best, the F-22, took over a decade of development. Now comes the time of deployment and with it, research and development of tactics to exploit its best qualities. That is an intangible that at best extremely difficult to quantify and can only be experienced, even as a spectator. So how long will it take the J-20 to complete its development? How long will it take the PLAAF to refine the current air doctrines to best exploits its best qualities? The J-20 is effectively China's first unassisted fighter in development. China has no foundation of/from low radar observable platforms in order to find out how to best exploit its best qualities. The PLAAF will be like US with the F-117. And I could go on and on...

Sorry, but the 30-40 yr gap estimate is more realistic.

China is not as wpowerful as the states and will not be for some time...but it is powerful enough to prevent any actual war from happening. The america of today is not the same america of the 60s...they factually cant afford another cold war...its too costly...and hoping that they learnt lessons....its more about playing a regent to other countries that would grow up and fight their wars...which though romantic is unfortunate.
