a personal run down of his life by me.
American trained Chinese general, who graduated from Qinghua, best Chinese university, then and now. The one that took his troops to India on the retreat from Burma, this resulted in the New first and new six army. The undisputed best in Asia.
He was one of a handful that could go head on with the Japanese one for one, except he had the distinction of achieving victory with considerably less casualties than Japanese enemies. These were the elite Japnese that got the honour of first entering Nanjing, and started the massacre, but it really doomed them as you will read.
Though his reputation is strained by him burying all Japanese captives alive due as revenge for his friend and classmate and his second in command, as well as all that perished as a result of them.
But in the end he is one of the most decorated by the Allies, as an Chinese, and got the honour of surveying the European battlefield at Eisenhower's invitation.
He was to take his new first army, nick named best army under the sky, to Japan for occupation, but was instead assigned to Northern China for the civil war. Probably good for Japanese, cause he was a likeable and charismatic man, but very ruthless and which suited his role as commanding General, but as a person not so much.
His later life include victories at every battle against communist, but due to political infighting he was given a pointless command and later relocated to Taiwan to train troops.
As the war deteriorated his Taiwan command was of the utmost importance and Chang usurped his command because there were rumours the Americans offered him the Presidency of Nationalist China. He was under house arrest for the rest of his life, only freed at the death of Chiang ChingKuo, Chiang's son, and later president.
