The captains of the Sakae Maru and Takayoshi Maru said two Chinese government vessels gave chase with the apparent aim of interfering with their fishing operations in the East China Sea.

The captains said they started pole-and-line fishing operations around 7 a.m. on Feb. 4 in territorial waters to the northwest of Uotsurishima island, the largest of the Senkakus.

Shortly after midday, two Chinese vessels approached. The Japanese boats moved to another location to avoid any trouble. But the two Chinese vessels started to run parallel to them.

The Japanese boats, both 19 tons and belonging to the Ibusuki fishery association in Kagoshima Prefecture, tried to elude the Chinese ships by sailing around Uotsurishima island, but gave up fishing around 5 p.m.

The 11th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters confirmed that two Chinese Haijian marine surveillance vessels had entered Japan’s territorial waters near the Senkakus that morning.

Haijian 46 was navigating Japan’s waters from 9:24 a.m. to 11:40 p.m., while Haijian 51 sailed in the waters around the Senkakus from 9:23 a.m. to 11:31 p.m.

“The Chinese government vessels came as close as one nautical mile (1,852 meters) to us,” said Shinobu Takasugi, the 52-year-old captain of the Takayoshi Maru. “They were intimidating, and we feared they would board our boat to inspect us.”
