This maybe the best time to look at building the high speed freight and passenger line from Urumqi to Moscow and onwards to Germany, instead of more lines inside China to maximize the utility of the lines already in operation and recoup some of the investment. East/west high speed freight traffic will better integrate Eurasia. This would also help shift some Chinese factories to lower labor cost provinces in the interior of China.

High speed train has maximum distance per trip. It needs to be maintained after certain milage. Intercontinental train trip is way too long for it. It would be great if China can manage to convince center Asia countries to build standard gauge railway to link Iran and then Turkey. From there continue to Europe and Africa.

There is a lot of political uncertainty building in Central Asia and Iran and the Balkans. It is more economically and politically feasible to build a route from the existing terminus of the Chinese HSR network at Urumqi, through just Russia, Belarus and Poland to Germany and the European HSR network.

If a intercontinental HSR route is needed, Russia maybe able to self finance it for their own geo-strategic and economic needs. Also the requirement could spur on R&D into better trains that can manage the distance.
