I do think our car companies live too comfortably in China with such a huge domestic market, and their incentives and motivation for exploring overseas market are essentially zero...

Electrical car definitely is the future, which we are the leaders. All those traditional car companies will become the past tense if they don't spend on R&D in this field. A lot of us may still remember Kodak , that company is dead now.
Even in the traditional car industry, we are only behind a few countries which you can count with your single hand. don't have to compare with Japan right now, but definitely within a decade or two. But for countries like india, their people will cry if they know they are buying over-priced crap all the time....

China which I consider to be relatively catching up in this industry is already light years ahead of India.
