China determined, able to safeguard its justified rights over Nansha Islands
June 28, 2015

China is determined and able to continue to safeguard its justified rights and interests of the Nansha Islands by legitimate means, Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Saturday.

"On the Nansha Islands issues, we have resolute determination and enough capabilities. We will continue to take reasonable and legitimate approaches to safeguard our justified rights and interests of the Nansha Islands. We will work with the ASEAN countries to ensure peace and stability of the Nansha Islands," Wang said when asked to comment on the Nansha Islands issue.

Wang delivered a speech at the luncheon of the Fourth World Peace Forum which took place at prestigious Tsinghua University on Saturday.

Wang said China will work with other countries to safeguard the freedom of navigation and overflight enjoyed by all countries in accordance with international law in the South China Sea.

On China's recent land reclamation project on some stationed islands and reefs of the Nansha Islands, Wang said the major aim is to improve the working and living conditions of the people on the islands and reefs.

As a big power, China also offered some public goods to the international community by put in place those facilities on the islands and reefs for civilian use, Wang said. ' "China's necessary construction on its own islands and reefs are totally different in nature from some countries' seizure of Chinese islands and building facilities there," Wang said.

Wang stressed China's sovereignty over the Nansha Islands is legally supported and based on facts, saying China fell victim to some countries' seizure and occupation of its islands and reefs since the exploration of oil in the South China Sea back to 1960s.

Wang said the Chinese government has always dealt with the Nansha Islands issue by peaceful means, citing the fact that China and ASEAN countries signed the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea.

"The Chinese government's position on the Nansha Islands is consistent. We will not change it," Wang said.

"China's sovereignty claim over the Nansha Islands has neither expanded nor dwindled," Wang said, calling on some countries to end the seizure and occupation of China's islands and reefs.

China to start building Nansha Islands facilities
2015-07-01

The Chinese government said on Tuesday that it has completed some of its land reclamation work in the Nansha Islands in the South China Sea and will now start building facilities on the reclaimed land to fulfill its functional requirements.

Hua Chunying, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said on Tuesday at a daily press briefing that land reclamation efforts on some of the islands and reefs of the Nansha Islands have been completed as scheduled.

"In the next stage, China will start the building of facilities to meet relevant functional requirements," she said.

The facilities, which will mainly provide various civilian services, will enable China to better perform its international obligations and responsibilities in areas such as maritime search and rescue, disaster prevention and mitigation, marine scientific research, meteorological observation, ecological conservation, navigation safety as well as fishery production services, Hua said. Necessary military defense requirements will also be fulfilled, she added.

China's construction work in the Nansha Islands has drawn criticism from several countries, including the US, which has called for a halt to the project and repeatedly voiced concerns about the country's future plans for more construction work, including for military purposes.

A US anti-submarine and maritime surveillance aircraft, with CNN reporters on board, flew over waters near China's Nansha Islands in May.

Rear Admiral Guan Youfei of China's defense ministry on June 15 urged the US to halt its increasing aerial surveillance of the region.

China has reiterated that its construction work in the region aims to provide civilian benefits and fulfill its international obligations.

China's major oil and gas company Sinopec has commenced the construction of a service station at the multipurpose port on Yongxin Island, Sansha city, south China's Hainan Province, the state-owned company announced on its social media account on December 14.

The move is to solve the petroleum supply difficulty in infrastructure construction in Sansha city, said Sinopec on Weibo, a twitter-like Chinese social media platform. Sansha is China's southernmost island city, whose central part locates on Yongxing, one of the Xisha islands.

The service station will be completed within three months, and the 2000-cubic-meter oil storage tank that comes along with it will be completed within a year. Once finished, the project is expected to satisfy the oil demands for all the islands in Sansha city, said Sinopec in the announcement.

How would one be able to withstand against the tide of development? Probably only the reactionaries. Vietnam's government is by essence anti-reactionary. The same cannot be said of the Philippines.

Wow! This is impressive.

There is a cruise/supply ship docked there, which mean there will be tourists.

There is also a stadium, but where is the casino?
