China's Megaton EMP warheads

1. A thermonuclear warhead (see project Starfish Prime) is itself an EMP warhead. China's DF-5 ICBM is armed with a five megaton thermonuclear warhead. Hence, the lower limit of Chinese EMP weapon capability is five megatons.

2. On the EMP chart, you can see that China's five megaton EMP warhead has a radius of 1,500 miles (see chart below).

3. 25 years ago, China detonated an enhanced radiation weapon or a neutron bomb. If China possesses the skill to tune a thermonuclear warhead to produce excessive neutrons then it's reasonable to believe China can tune thermonuclear warheads to produce excessive gamma rays for an EMP warhead.

4. The citations from MissileThreat.com/Jane's Defense show that China has built EMP warheads for its DF-21A and DF-25 MRBMs and JL-1A SLBM. Hence, China can easily install the same EMP warheads on ICBMs or the longer-range JL-2 SLBM.

5. I don't really care whether you want to use a five megaton or 16.5 megaton EMP warhead for Chinese capabilities. There isn't that much of a difference. The effective radius is somewhere between 1,500 to 2,000 miles.

using EMP is flawed tactics,as it destroys a large area.it generally do more harm than good.and also,US military is using EMP resistant electronic parts many years now(since Cold War).EMP isn't an effective weapon against US Armed force(and many other Armed forces also),but against civilians where these infrastructures are non-existent.

You're wrong. Physics is physics. A jet fighter will drop out of the sky when a megaton EMP warhead detonates. All of the electronics and electrical wiring within the aircraft will fuse.

You need many feet of lead to stop 50,000 volts per meter from damaging electronics and electrical wiring. Have you seen an airborne fighter with many feet of lead on all sides to prevent damage from an EMP blast? I didn't think so.

There are press reports to indicate this is the case, but no one at the Pentagon or the CIA has been willing to go on the record to confirm it.

Here's a data on the percent of Gamma ray emission from a typical high altitude nuclear detonation.

How the peak EMP on the ground varies with the weapon yield and burst altitude. Note that the yield here is the prompt gamma ray output measured in kilotons. This varies from 0.1-0.5% of the total weapon yield, depending on weapon design. The 1.4 Mt total yield 1962 Starfish test had an output of 0.1%, hence 1.4 kt of prompt gamma rays. (The blue 'pre-ionisation' curve applies where gamma and x-rays from the weapon's primary stage ionise the atmosphere, making it electrically conductive before the main pulse from the thermonuclear stage. The pre-ionisation can literally short out part of the final EMP.)

Even taking the highest value of 0.5% and and increasing the yield by a factor of 2 in Enhanced Radiation mode, the percent of Gamma Ray yield will barely increase by 1%.

Future Weapons did an EMP test to see the affects it would have on an RC helicopter. As soon as the RC helo reached an altitude where the EMP field was present it shut down and came hurling downwards back to ground. They also test driving a vehicle through the EMP field, vehicle's electronics become disabled and the car comes to a halt.

It doesn't need to cover lead all around to defend electronic parts from EMP..read this..

The E-4B offered a vast increase in communications capability over the previous model and was considered to be 'hardened' against the effects of electromagnetic pulse (EMP) from a nuclear blast. Hardening the aircraft meant that all equipment and wiring on board was shielded from EMP.

We're talking at least five megatons causing 50,000 volts per meter.

See the difference?

Shielding will be equally effective in this case also, and 50000 volts/meter is the peak voltage above the detonation points, it'll reduce drastically with distance.

I understand, but EMP generation is directly proportional to Gamma ray emission. Now what is the percentage increase of Gamma ray emission in an Enhanced Radiation warhead?

Without any proof of that, it's futile to make such absurd claims. Probabilities are, the gamma ray emission are far lower in Enhanced radiation warhead than typical nuclear warhead.

A point of confusion amongst many people (including me, I admit) is that gamma rays sees to be proportional to the yield. That is not always the case. Nuclear weapons can be made to specifically release huge amounts of radiation while maintaining a low blast radius or vice versa, allowing limited structural damage but massive casualties.

I have already proved my point about the yield of enhanced Radiation warhead is mostly X-ray and neutron emissions, which doesn't generate flux for electromagnetic pulse. And enhanced radiation warhead is by no means a EMP device.

If you want to debate, then debate in the language of physics and technicalities, not by the mental masturbation of @Martian2.

Maneuverability depends only on the aerodynamic lift (which in turn depends on wing loading) and nothing else, thrust to weight ratio is an indicator only for acceleration.

Normally, China's DF-5 ICBM carries a five megaton thermonuclear warhead. According to the Federation of American Scientists, an enhanced radiation weapon (such as an EMP warhead) has a multiplicative factor of 3.3 when a normal nuclear warhead is specifically tuned to emit gamma rays.

Detonating a 16.5 megaton EMP above Japan will neutralize all aircraft and surface warships in Japan.

An EMP covers an area with a radius of 1,500 miles and creates 50,000 volts per meter through the Compton effect in electrical wiring and electronics.

No one will be killed and the Japanese will be unable to fight a war. In essence, Japan can only surrender.

Incidentally, there are a number of military assets that are hardened against EMPs (and China knows that)

An EMP is not a nuclear attack. In a nuclear attack, millions of people die. In contrast, an EMP is exploded 100 miles above Japan and hurts no one.

Though an EMP is powered by a thermonuclear weapon, it merely emits massive electromagnetic waves. The EMP destroys weapon systems, but does not harm people.

It is true that China has 41 super-hardened airbases located under mountains or hills of granite. However, the Japanese and foreign airbases (such as Kadena) are all above-ground and unprotected against a massive EMP.
