So, basically US uses Destroyers + Cruisers for AC protection and they have 65 destroyers & 27 Cruisers. So, in total US have 90+ vessels available for AC battle groups.
However China don't have any Cruisers so it needs to fill up that gap with 055 for the time being. 20+ for Destroyer Commands and 20+ for AC Battle groups. Now I think it would be clear why China needs 50 type 055

The Type 055 is the Ticonderoga equivalent.

The article says the Chinese will use the Type 052D and 055, similar to the AB and Ticon. So you can expect the Chinese to build a lot of Type 052Ds as well, not just Type 055. They were planning 26+ Type 052Ds.
