But anything you can do today? China's defense budget alone is far bigger than the vn GDP. Needless to say the high spending efficiency of the China defense budget, because almost all the military stuff is made by China on its own.

China's Jiangnan Shipyard, 15 large destroyers (052D or 055) are under construction in parallel. Have you ever seen anything similar in else place in the modern age? Ahh, forget to mention, there is also a 80k ton aircraft carrier under building in the picture, EMALS catapult equipped. And this is just ONE shipyard in China.

I don't think your so-called "sacrifice our economy a bit for military buildup" could make the picture today any difference. Defense budget as a % of GDP wise, vn already records higher than China. How much you can expect from your tiny economy scale and the primitive manufacturing industry? Remember, China spends only 1.9% of the GDP on military, the lowest among all the major powers in the world. And you already see the achievement China does with the 1.9% GDP ratio. There is sufficient space for China to enhance the military spending, if China feels the urgency.

I definitely think Vietnam is next on the target list after Taiwan. It's the most belligerent and confrontational of the claimants in South China Sea. Malaysia and Philippines are both willing to play ball, so they can get a slice of the pie. By crippling Vietnamese infrastructure and military capabilities, China can set back their growth and create political instability. If Vietnam fractures in two again, it's even better. I see we share some similarities concerning the geography terrain before the capital. If our enemy breaks thru the border defense, it is for us difficult to almost impossible to defend Hanoi.
Hanoi is located in a plain terrain. Only the high difficult terrains with high mountains along the border especially the western flank protect our lower lands.
