National leaders from seven countries will visit China and attend the 12th Meeting of the Council of Heads of Member States of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) from June 1 to 9, Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin announced Thursday.

The leaders include Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon, Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambaev, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Uzbek President Islam Karimov, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

Liu made the announcement at a regular press briefing, adding that their visits will come at the invitation of Chinese President Hu Jintao.

Turkistan Islamic Party identifies senior leader killed in Afghanistan

The Turkistan Islamic Party, an al Qaeda affiliate that operates in Central and South Asia, has identified a senior member of the group who was killed in a US airstrike last year in northwestern Afghanistan.

The Islamic Turkistan Magazine, which is published by the Turkistan Islamic Party, published a martyrdom statement announcing the death of Shaykh Qurban Ata, a Chinese Uighur who was killed in February 2010. The martyrdom statement was distributed to jihadist websites by the Al Fajr Media Center, an official outlet for al Qaeda propaganda.

Ata was among 15 members of the Turkistan Islamic Party killed in the Feb. 17, 2010 airstrike in Badghis province in northwestern Afghanistan. Four days later, the Turkistan Islamic Party announced that 15 of its members, including 13 Uighurs and two Turks, were killed during an airstrike on a terrorist "camp" in Afghanistan.

Ata, who was from Ghulja in China's Xinjiang province, was 71 when killed. He had a "hatred of the nonbelievers" and had long expressed a "desire for jihad," the statement read. He had traveled to Pakistan in the 1990s, and upon his return home, he recruited young Chinese to wage jihad.

Just weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the US, Ata traveled to Afghanistan. Once there, he "answered the call of jihad and fought the Crusaders in Afghanistan" for nine years until he was killed.

I have no info about TIM, so I got a question. Do they have support among Uighurs in Xinjiang, like, do Uighurs actually want independence? I heard Uighurs face discrimination in Xinjiang, so that maybe could be an affecting factor.

They probably get some support especially from the poorer southern Xinjiang. Once we asked an oversea Uighur student who used to go to the same oversea Chinese forum as I do about the rough percentage of Uighurs that want full independence. He said probably 10-12%, most of them from Southern Xinjiang. But much fewer people actually support TIM, feeling that their extreme measures won't achieve anything and only make troubles.

I can't disagree with this, although in fairness controlling fata has never been easy, and in this climate it's exponentially harder.

i give critisim where it's due

unfortunately it was the Uighurs who started the riots of 2008, not the Hans Chinese. The whole thing began when one mentally disturbed guy started attacking Han migrants with needles and knives. Set off chain reaction.

we do hope that PRC would be able to find a way to solve this INTERNAL issue politically...Pakistan would likely continue cooperation to shut down groups like these that have - unfortunately - resorted to violent means to achieve their objectives. Who is CONTINUING to arm them and fund them should be fully investigated and monitored closely.
